Chapter 2: The Red Taillights on the Post Road

Clara did not pack the designer gowns Julian had bought to display her at charity galas. She did not take the diamond tennis bracelets or the platinum jewelry resting in the velvet drawers of the master suite.

She walked up to the nursery, packed three changes of clothes for Lily, grabbed her laptop, her passport, her academic research hard drives, and Lily’s favorite hand-knit blanket.

She carried the small duffel bag down the grand curved staircase.

Eleanor was standing in the foyer, sipping tea from an antique porcelain cup. ""If you walk out that door with that child, Clara, Julian will cut off your credit cards before you reach the gate. You will have nothing.""

""I came into this house with nothing, Eleanor,"" Clara said calmly, stepping past her onto the limestone porch. ""And I am leaving with the only thing that has any value.""

Outside, an October drizzle was falling over the manicured lawn.

Clara placed Lily in the back seat of her practical, six-year-old hatchback—the only vehicle titled in her maiden name—and buckled her into her car seat.

Julian walked out onto the stone steps, his tie loosened, his face flushed with irritation. ""Clara, get back inside! You're making a fool of yourself! The neighbors are watching!""

Clara opened the driver’s door, looking at the man she had loved.

""The neighbors are watching a coward, Julian,"" Clara said quietly. ""Goodbye.""

She started the engine, shifted into drive, and steered down the long gravel driveway.

In the rearview mirror, the grand facade of the Sterling estate—with its towering columns, slate roofs, and cold exterior floodlights—shrank into the rainy mist.

As the red taillights of her car turned onto the Boston Post Road, heading east toward Rhode Island, Lily reached through the back seat, her small hand brushing Clara’s shoulder.

""Mommy?""

""Yes, my sweet girl?""

""Do we have to go back?""

May you like

Clara reached back, squeezing Lily’s warm, soft fingers. ""Never again, Lily-bug. Never, ever again.""
