Chapter 9: The Turning Point

Before Beatrice’s fingers could graze the necklace, a sharp, deafening sound echoed from the far end of the property—a dull, concussive boom that rattled the crystal pendants on the grand chandelier overhead.
The entire hallway shook. The tactical operative holding Richard momentarily lost his balance, his grip slackening just enough for Richard to slam his heel down hard onto the man’s boot and drive his elbow backward into the ribs.
The operative grunted, stumbling back. Richard broke free, gasping for air, and immediately lunged forward to place himself between Beatrice and his daughter. He scooped Clara up into his arms in one fluid motion, hauling her and Elena backward toward the open dining room doors.
“Move!” Richard yelled, adrenaline overriding the pain in his bruised ribs.
Beatrice regained her composure instantly, shouting orders to her men. “Secure the perimeter! Don’t let them reach the back exit!”
Another explosion—closer this time—rocked the eastern wing of the estate, casting erratic flashes of orange light through the tall stained-glass windows. Thick black smoke began to curl into the air from the direction of the garage, smelling of burning rubber and gasoline.
Richard shoved Elena and Clara through the swinging mahogany doors of the formal dining room, slamming the heavy barrier behind them and throwing the brass deadbolt into place. It wouldn’t hold a tactical breach charge for more than a few seconds, but it bought them precious time.
“Through the pantry! Now!” Richard commanded, ushering Elena, who was limping badly from her fall, toward the service quarters.
They raced through the labyrinth of the butler’s pantry, the massive stainless-steel countertops and commercial refrigerators blurring past in the dim emergency lighting. The second explosion had tripped the estate's backup generator, plunging large sections of the house into deep shadow, punctuated only by the strobing red glow of the fire alarm system.
Who had triggered the explosions? Had Julian come back? Or was there a third player in this deadly game?
“Richard, look!” Elena cried out, pointing toward the heavy metal service door that led out to the courtyard gardens.

Standing by the exit, illuminated by the flickering red strobe, was a tall, familiar figure in a dark trench coat, bleeding heavily from a wound in his shoulder, holding a heavy-duty industrial crowbar in one hand and a smoking flare in the other.
It was Julian.
