Chapter 6: Into the Lion’s Den

Rising from his crouch, Richard stepped out from the protective shadow of the staircase and walked across the marble floor toward the front entrance. His footsteps echoed loudly in the cavernous hallway, a lonely rhythm marking his approach to the threshold. He reached the heavy oak door, his hand hovering over the cold brass handle for a fraction of a second before he turned it and pulled the door inward.
The night air rushed in, carrying the scent of rain and pine, accompanied by the harsh glare of high-powered tactical flashlights that instantly blinded him. Richard raised a hand to shield his eyes, squinting into the dazzling white illumination.
Standing on the porch were two figures, clad in dark, unmarked tactical gear. Their faces were partially obscured by darkness and visors, but the dark outlines of suppressed firearms held at low-ready positions were unmistakable. They didn't look like common criminals or hitmen from a movie; they looked like professionals—efficient, detached, and utterly lethal.
“Richard Vance?” the lead man asked. His voice was flat, American-accented, and clipped.
“Who are you? What do you want?” Richard demanded, keeping his voice firm despite the blinding light and the cold metal barrel pointed vaguely in his direction. He planted his feet firmly on the threshold, blocking the view into the hallway behind him where Elena and Clara were hidden.
The man didn’t answer the question directly. Instead, he took a step forward, forcing Richard to yield ground or risk physical confrontation. The man was broad-shouldered, wearing body armor that bore no insignia, badges, or identification numbers.
“Your brother was here tonight, Mr. Vance,” the man said, his tone conversational yet chillingly menacing. “He left in a hurry. But he forgot something very important. Something that belongs to our employer.”
“I haven’t seen Julian in years,” Richard lied, cursing the slight tremor in his voice that he couldn't entirely suppress. “If he was here, he broke in. Call the police. I’m sure they’ll be very interested in armed men trespassing on private property.”
A dry, humorless chuckle came from behind the tactical visor. “The police are currently busy elsewhere, Mr. Vance. Jurisdiction in this matter belongs to entities far above local law enforcement. Now, we can do this the easy way, or we can search this lovely estate room by room. But trust me when I say that the second option is going to be exceptionally messy for your wife and daughter.”
The explicit threat hung in the cool night air like a guillotine blade. Richard felt every drop of blood freeze in his veins. They knew about Clara. They knew about Elena. The illusion of safety he had built around his family was completely shattered.
“What do you want from us?” Richard asked, dropping the defiant posture, realizing that fighting was suicide.

“The ring, Richard,” a new voice chimed in from the darkness behind the two tactical agents.
A third figure stepped into the ring of flashlight beam, lowering a hood to reveal the sharp, immaculate features of a woman in a tailored gray trench coat. She looked entirely out of place among the mercenaries, carrying herself with the unmistakable aura of corporate royalty and absolute power.
