Chapter 3 - The Echo in the Walls

The metallic click of the deadbolt echoed through the silence, vibrating against the hardwood floors. David’s eyes darted from the television screen back to the dark hallway, his muscles tensing for action. Clara stood completely rigid, her breathing shallow, her eyes fixed on the shadows where the hallway met the kitchen. The grandfather clock ticked heavily, marking the seconds with agonizing slowness as the tension in the room reached a breaking point.
"David, don't move," Clara whispered, her voice losing its previous cold detachment, replaced by a sudden, frantic urgency that felt entirely rehearsed. "You don't understand what you're dealing with. Some doors are meant to stay locked for a reason."
David ignored her, his hand gripping the edge of the television console for support. The digital footage on the screen still glowed with the timestamp of 2:14 AM, showing the exact moment the alternate version of Lily had vanished into the pitch-black laundry room. But the sound they had just heard was happening right now, in real-time, in the physical house. Lily buried her face deeper into her battered stuffed rabbit, whimpering softly as she pressed her back against the sofa.
"Daddy, make it stop," Lily sobbed, her small frame shaking violently. "She’s right behind the wall. She’s trying to find a way back into my room."
"Nobody is touching my daughter," David growled, his voice dropping an octave as adrenaline surged through his veins. He stepped past Clara, his eyes scanning the living room for a weapon. His hand brushed against a heavy brass candelabra resting on the mahogany side table. He grabbed it, the cold metal grounding him as he faced the abyss of the hallway.
Clara lunged forward, her fingers catching the fabric of his dark blue button-down shirt. "You'll ruin everything! If you open that door, the cycle starts over, and we won't survive the reset!"
David spun around, shoving her hand away with a harsh motion. "What are you talking about, Clara? Who is in that room? Who did you lock away?"
Before Clara could answer, a soft scratching sound emanated from behind the living room wall, right where the bookshelf met the drywall. It sounded like fingernails dragging lightly against plaster, moving methodically upward from the floorboards toward the ceiling. David froze, his breath catching in his throat as he stared at the cream-colored paint. The scratching stopped abruptly, followed by a faint, childish giggle that sent ice water straight through his veins.
"Found you," a voice whispered from inside the wall, sounding chillingly close to Lily's natural tone, yet layered with a hollow, digital distortion.
David raised the brass candelabra, his knuckles turning white. He took a slow, calculated step toward the wall, pressing his ear against the cool surface. The silence that followed was suffocating, broken only by the erratic breathing of the three living people in the room. Suddenly, the television screen behind him flickered violently, the security camera app crashing to a black screen, and the red recording indicator light began to flash in a frantic, erratic pattern.
"David," Clara whispered, her face completely drained of color as she pointed a trembling hand at the monitor. "Look at the camera ID... it's not recording the house anymore."

David turned slowly to look at the screen. The camera label at the top had changed from 'Hallway-North' to a string of numbers that spelled out a terrifying warning.
