Chapter 10 - The Seam Tears Open

The familiar voice echoed through the bright meadow, cutting through the warm breeze like a jagged blade of glass. The tear in the sky widened further, revealing the polished hardwood floors and the beige rug of their old living room. The grandfather clock ticked louder, its mechanical rhythm overpowering the peaceful sounds of the open field.

"Daddy, I don't want to go back there!" Lily cried out, clinging frantically to David’s leg as the wind around them began to pick up, blowing in a sharp, artificial draft that smelled faintly of ozone and old dust.

David looked down at his daughter, then across at Clara, whose face was pale with a terrifying realization. The background code scrolling across the sky was moving faster now, flashing bright green and red against the fading azure backdrop. The system was trying to force a rollback, attempting to pull their consciousness back into the physical constraints of the local server before the memory cache could be permanently erased.

"Hold onto me, both of you!" David shouted over the rising roar of digital static that filled the air.

He dropped to his knees, wrapping his arms securely around Lily and pulling Clara down beside them. He pressed his face into the soft grass, digging his fingers deep into the soil as if he could physically anchor the meadow to the ground. But the earth beneath them was beginning to lose its solidity, turning into a grainy, pixelated texture that felt like shifting sand.

Through the tear in the sky, the camera feed from the television monitor projected outward into the meadow, casting a harsh blue light over the idyllic landscape. On the screen, the alternate version of Clara could be seen leading the alternate Lily down the dark hallway toward the laundry room. The timestamp in the corner flashed frantically: 2:15 AM - SYSTEM RESTORE IN PROGRESS.

"It’s not a rollback, David!" Clara screamed over the roar, her voice straining as she fought against the invisible suction pulling them toward the tear. "It’s a merge! The system is trying to combine the simulation with the final memory!"

David looked up, his eyes widening in horror. As the two realities collided, the green grass and oak tree began to dissolve into the peeling wallpaper of the hallway, and the warm sunlight was swallowed by the harsh overhead chandelier of the house. The boundary between what was real and what was coded vanished completely, leaving them standing right back on the plush beige rug of the living room, facing the wall-mounted television.

Lily was crying, clutching her stuffed rabbit. Clara was standing beside him, her chest heaving. And on the television screen, the security camera footage showed David standing right where he was, staring up at the monitor in absolute, paralyzing shock.
