Chapter 2 - The Glowing Screen

The living room was cast in an eerie, dim glow emanating entirely from the wall-mounted home security monitor. My father stood frozen directly in front of it, his breath hitching audibly in the quiet house. On the high-definition screen, the timestamp glowed in bright red digits, marking the exact moment the expensive antique porcelain vase had shattered into a thousand jagged pieces on the hardwood floor just twenty minutes earlier.

He leaned in closer, his tall frame tensing as the footage began to play in ruthless, silent high definition. The camera angle captured the interior of the brightly lit laundry room and the adjoining hallway corner. My mother appeared on the screen first. She was wearing her pristine white satin blouse, moving with a calculated, deliberate grace that completely contradicted the helpless persona she had projected in front of him only moments ago.

On the monitor, my mother turned around, looked directly toward the doorway where I had been standing, and intentionally shoved the heavy shelf holding the heirloom vase. She watched it crash down with cold satisfaction before smoothing her hair and instantly twisting her features into an expression of profound distress.

My father stared at the monitor with wide, shocked, and horrified eyes, breathing heavily in stunned silence. The dark blue button-down shirt he wore seemed suddenly too tight, constricting his chest as a sickening wave of realization washed over him. Every argument, every misplaced blame, and every silent tear I had shed over the past year flashed before his gaze in a terrifying new light. He wasn't just looking at a broken vase; he was looking at the undeniable proof of a systematic, calculated betrayal living right under his own roof.

He reached out a trembling hand, his fingertips brushing the cold glass of the screen as if trying to touch the ghost in the machine. The video looped, showing my mother's smiling malice once more before fading back to the live feed of an empty hallway. He turned his head slowly, looking back toward the dining room where I still stood clutching my stuffed white bunny, waiting in the dark. But before he could take a single step toward me, a soft, chilling chime echoed from the security unit, alerting them to a second, entirely different camera feed he had never bothered to check.
