Chapter 10 - The Second Bunny

The strange shadow stepping out from the dark hallway behind the officers froze everyone in the room. I let out a sharp gasp, clutching my stuffed white bunny even tighter to my chest as my wide eyes locked onto the figure standing near the threshold.

It was another little girl—roughly my age, wearing an identical white dress with a pink sash, her short blonde hair styled in the exact same way. She held a duplicate stuffed white bunny with a faded pink ribbon, staring at the floor with a blank, lifeless expression that felt utterly unnatural.

The lead officer spun around, lowering his weapon in sheer confusion as he looked between the child standing in the hallway and the chaotic scene unfolding in the living room. "What the hell is going on here? Whose child is that?"

My mother scrambled to her feet, her tear-streaked face instantly shifting from feigned terror to a cold, predatory triumph. "That's my daughter," she said smoothly, walking over and resting a protective hand on the mysterious little girl's shoulder. "My husband has been keeping her hidden away in the basement for months. He's been losing his mind, officers. You need to take him away before he hurts us again."

My father stumbled backward, hitting the edge of the living room wall monitor with a dull thud. "She's lying! That's not—I have only one daughter! Look at me!" he screamed, pointing a shaking finger toward where I stood near the dining table.

Except when the officer's tactical flashlight swept across the dining room doorway, the space was completely empty. I wasn't there anymore. The shadows were vacant, the floorboards silent, and the heavy wooden chair sat alone in the dim light.

"There's no one over there, sir," the lead officer said sternly, his hand tightening on the grip of his holster as he stepped closer to my father. "Step away from the wall. You're coming with us for evaluation and questioning."

"No! Look at the monitors! The cameras prove everything!" my father yelled, lunging toward the wall-mounted security screen to pull up the recorded footage of the laundry room and the basement archives.

He pressed his finger against the touch screen, but the interface flashed a harsh, bright red error code: "ACCESS DENIED. SYSTEM REFORMATTED."

All the archived video files, the proof of the surveillance grid, the footage of the basement, and the evidence of my mother's calculated malice vanished into the digital void in a single second. The screen now displayed only a live, static-filled feed of an empty, quiet street outside.

My mother smiled faintly, her dark hair framing a face devoid of any human empathy as she led the second little girl silently out toward the waiting police cruiser. Two officers moved forward, grabbing my father's arms and forcing them behind his back as they slapped cold steel handcuffs around his wrists.

As they dragged him toward the open front door, past the flashing red and blue lights, he caught a fleeting glimpse of a small hand pressing against the rear window of the police cruiser parked outside. But as the patrol car door slammed shut, the interior light flickered off, revealing something pressed against the glass that made his blood run completely cold.
