Chapter 1 - The Spark of Truth

The crystal chandeliers of the grand dining room cast a shimmering, cold illumination over the table laden with silver and crystal. Outside, a heavy autumn rain lashed against the tall French windows, but inside, the air was suffocatingly still, thick with the scent of roasted meats and expensive wine.
Lily stood just inside the threshold. The four-year-old’s light pink flannel pajamas were slightly rumpled from her escape upstairs, and her small arms clutched a worn, graying stuffed bunny with ferocious loyalty. Her brown hair fell in soft, tangled waves around her flushed face. Without a drop of hesitation, she raised a small, stubby finger and pointed directly at the head of the table.
“That’s my mommy’s ring!” Lily shouted, her voice ringing clear and excited through the hushed room, piercing the polite murmur of the dinner party like a shard of glass.
Arthur stared down at the hand resting near his wineglass. His dark hair was meticulously combed, and the stark black of his suit and tie made him look like an executioner standing in a ballroom. His jaw tightened until the muscle ticked dangerously. He grabbed Elena’s wrist, pulling her hand toward him with sudden, raw force. The silver ring with its intricate star pattern and sparkling stones caught the candlelight, glaringly familiar.
“Don’t be ridiculous,” Arthur said firmly, his voice dropping an octave, heavy with dangerous disbelief. “Show me your hand.”
Elena tried to pull away, her blue evening dress whispering against the mahogany chair. “Arthur, you’re making a scene. Let go of me.”
“Where did your mother keep it?” Arthur demanded, his grip tightening until the knuckles turned white. Elena stared back at him, her eyes wide with mounting panic and absolute confusion.
Lily looked up earnestly, her wide, innocent eyes reflecting the tension in the room as she hugged her stuffed bunny tighter. “In the wood box by her bed.”

Arthur stopped breathing. That wooden box had been buried with Clara six years ago.
