Chapter 4 - Shards of Glass

The cold night air rushed into the dining room, instantly chilling the warm air and extinguishing the remaining candles, plunging the space into near-total darkness save for the pale moonlight cutting through the broken doors. Julian thrust himself in front of Lily and Clara, holding the heavy silver candlestick aloft like a club. Glass crunched beneath heavy boots as a tall, imposing silhouette stepped over the shattered frame and into the room.

The intruder wore a dark trench coat that seemed to absorb the moonlight, a broad-brimmed hat casting a deep shadow over his face. He moved with terrifying grace, completely unbothered by the dangerous shards of glass littering the floor.

The Man in the Trench Coat spoke in a low, gravelly voice:

“Time is up, Mrs. Vance. And it looks like you brought an unwanted guest to our final transaction.”

Julian tightened his grip on the candlestick, his heart pounding in his ears.

Julian demanded:

“Step back right now, or I will call the police.”

The intruder let out a low, humorless chuckle that sounded like grinding stones. He reached into his coat pocket, his movements slow and deliberate.

The intruder replied:

“The police are currently busy dealing with a massive fire at your corporate headquarters, Mr. Vance. By the time they sort through the ashes, you and your family will be miles away.”

Clara stood up, pushing past Julian with a sudden burst of frantic courage. She grabbed the clear plastic bag of white powder from Lily’s small hands and slammed it down onto the dining table.

Clara shouted:

“Here! Take it! Take every last gram of it and leave us alone!”

The man in the trench coat didn't even look at the bag. Instead, his gaze slid past Clara, fixing directly upon five-year-old Lily, who stood clutching her teddy bear without a single trace of fear in her wide eyes.

The intruder murmured:

“The powder was never the full payment, Mrs. Vance. We agreed on the powder, the accounts, and the girl.”

Julian experienced a surge of pure, blinding rage that momentarily erased all fear. He lunged forward, swinging the heavy silver candlestick directly at the intruder’s head with all his might.

Julian screamed:

“Get away from my daughter!”

The intruder sidestepped the blow with casual ease, grabbed Julian’s wrist with iron strength, and twisted his arm behind his back with a sickening crunch. Julian cried out in pain as he was forced to his knees, the cold hardwood pressing against his chest.

Clara shrieked, rushing forward to claw at the man’s face.

Clara screamed:

“Let him go! Take me instead!”

The intruder casually backhanded Clara, sending her crashing hard against the mahogany dining table, where she slid to the floor, her silver gown tearing on a stray piece of broken glass. Lily stood silently in the center of the carnage, her small fingers patting the head of her teddy bear.

Lily looked down at her fallen mother, then up at the towering man holding her father captive, and spoke with eerie calmness.

Lily whispered:

May you like

“You forgot to check the teddy bear, mister. Grandma recorded everything.”
