Chapter 2 - Whispers in the Dark

The heavy oak doors of the dining room suddenly rattled as a cold draft swept through the space, extinguishing three of the candles on the table. Julian spun around, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. The dim, warm lighting of the crystal chandelier flickered erratically, casting long, dancing shadows across the expensive wallpaper. Clara sank back into her chair, her diamond necklace trembling against her heaving chest. She looked defeated, the glamorous veneer of the evening completely shattered by a five-year-old child's innocent revelation.

Julian took a slow step toward the window, his eyes darting across the manicured lawn visible through the glass. The shadows beneath the ancient oak trees seemed to shift, taking on unnatural shapes in the moonlight. He tried to process the surreal nightmare unfolding around him. The white powder sat on the table like a small, deadly mountain, a monument to a betrayal he never saw coming.

Julian turned back to Clara, his voice dropping to a harsh, dangerous whisper.

Julian asked:

“Who was she talking to, Clara? Who taught our daughter how to read lips?”

Clara kept her eyes fixed on her lap, refusing to meet his burning gaze.

Clara murmured:

“My mother. Before she passed away, she taught Lily. She said a house built on secrets needs someone watching the doors.”

Julian slammed his fist against the mahogany sideboard, making the silverware rattle.

Julian growled:

“Your mother has been dead for three years! How could she teach a two-year-old how to read lips across a room?”

Lily stood quietly by the table, her small hand stroking the worn ear of her teddy bear. She didn't look like a terrified child; she looked like a witness at a trial, calm and entirely detached from the chaos she had unleashed.

Lily spoke softly:

“Grandma didn’t teach me here, Daddy. She taught me on the phone. You thought she was just singing lullabies to me when you were at work.”

Julian felt a cold sweat break out across the back of his neck. He looked from his daughter to his wife, realizing he knew nothing about the lives they led when he was away building his empire. The wealth, the prestige, the silver gown, and the tuxedo were all part of a gilded cage.

Julian whispered:

“What else have you been reading, Lily? What else did they say?”

Clara suddenly gripped the edges of the table, her knuckles turning bone-white.

Clara pleaded:

“Julian, stop asking. If you know, they will have to silence us all.”

Before Julian could demand an answer, a sharp tap echoed from the glass of the French doors leading to the dark garden.
