Chapter 9 - The Sprint Through the Grid

Without a second warning, Maya spun on her heel, shoving past Zuri with enough force to send the little girl stumbling against the glass door, and sprinted blindly across the wet grass toward the rear fence. The sudden burst of movement shattered the sterile calm of the backyard. Shouts echoed from the perimeter agents, their synchronized footsteps splashing heavily through the mud as they converged on her path.

"Stop her! Protocol Breach!" Vance’s voice cut through the damp air like a whip.

Maya didn't look back. Her sensible loafers slipped on the rain-slicked turf, nearly sending her crashing to the ground, but she caught her balance and lunged forward, her arms pumping at her sides. The wooden fence loomed larger by the second—a six-foot barrier topped with barbed wire that she had never paid attention to before. It wasn't designed to keep intruders out; it was designed to keep the test subjects in.

She reached the wooden planks, leaped up, and grabbed the top edge, pulling her weight upward with a desperate surge of adrenaline. Her fingers scraped against the rough wood, splinters biting deep into her skin, but she ignored the pain. As she hoisted her legs over the top rail, a sharp tug caught the hem of her beige blazer.

She looked down. Ethan stood directly beneath her, his small hand gripping the fabric of her jacket with a grip that defied his eight-year-old frame. His dark, curly hair was plastered to his forehead by the drizzle, and his eyes burned with an unsettling, synthetic intensity.

"You can't leave the grid, Maya," Ethan said calmly, his other hand holding the black remote up toward her face. The red light was flashing so fast it appeared solid, glowing like a miniature star. "There is nothing outside the perimeter. Just the desert."

"Let go of me, Ethan!" Maya cried, wrenching her body forward with a violent twist of her torso.

The fabric of her blazer tore with a loud ripping sound, leaving a jagged piece of beige cloth in the boy's hand. Maya tumbled over the other side of the fence, crashing heavily onto the gravel path of the alleyway outside. Pain flared up her left ankle, but she scrambled to her feet, ignoring the throbbing ache, and began limping down the dark, narrow passage between the houses.

High above the alley, industrial streetlamps flickered to life one by one, casting a harsh, artificial white light over the pavement. But as Maya hobbled forward, she realized with mounting horror that the alleyway didn't lead to the main street. It curved sharply to the left, ending abruptly at a massive, sheer concrete wall that stretched upward into the misty night sky, disappearing into the artificial fog of the dome overhead.

There was no outside world. There was no desert. The entire suburban neighborhood was built inside a colossal, enclosed subterranean cavern.

Footsteps echoed sharply behind her in the narrow alley. Maya turned around, panting heavily, her back pressed against the cold concrete barrier as Detective Vance and three perimeter agents stepped out from the shadows, blocking her only exit.
