Chapter 5 - The Uninvited Guest

The cheerful chime of the doorbell vibrated through the quiet house, sending a fresh jolt of adrenaline through Maya's veins. She stood frozen in the center of the dining room, staring at the dead black remote resting in the gravy on the white platter. The chime rang a second time, more insistent now, breaking the eerie silence that had settled after the basement door slammed. Whoever was standing on the front porch knew the power was out. They knew the children were inside. And most importantly, they knew Maya was alone.
Taking a deep, trembling breath, Maya wiped her hand on her beige blazer and stepped away from the dining table. She walked cautiously down the long hallway, her footsteps silent against the hardwood floor. The amber porch light outside was flickering, casting erratic shadows through the frosted glass of the front door. She approached the entryway, keeping her eyes fixed on the hazy silhouette standing just beyond the threshold.
"Who is it?" Maya called out, her voice tight and guarded.
"Open the door, Maya," a muffled voice replied from the porch.
The blood drained from her face for the second time that evening. The voice was unmistakable. It belonged to Detective Vance, the lead investigator on her husband's cold case, a man who had supposedly retired and moved out of state six months ago.
Maya’s fingers hovered over the deadbolt. Vance had been the one to assure her that the investigation was over, that her husband’s disappearance was a simple matter of financial embezzlement and abandonment. But standing out there in the dark, with the memory of the red light and the children's cryptic words still ringing in her ears, nothing felt simple anymore.
"You shouldn't be here," Maya said, pressing her palm flat against the cold wood of the door. "The case is closed. You told me yourself."
"Cases like this never close, Maya," Vance’s voice drifted through the wood, carrying a chilling lack of warmth. "Especially not when the primary asset is still unaccounted for. And by the look of your circuit breaker, I'd say you've just realized the children aren't who you think they are."
Maya’s breath caught. How could he possibly know about the power? She hadn't called anyone. The house was completely isolated.
Before she could process the warning, the lock on the front door clicked loudly from the inside, turning all on its own without a single hand touching the mechanism. The heavy oak door swung slowly inward, revealing the dark, rain-slicked porch—and the empty space where Detective Vance should have been standing.

Instead of a person, a small manila envelope lay on the welcome mat, weighted down by a familiar, heavy brass key. A fresh red light blinked from inside the dark mailbox bolted to the exterior wall.
