Chapter 6 - The Key Under the Floorboards

The grandfather clock in the corner of the living room began to chime, its deep, resonant gongs counting out ten o'clock with agonizing slowness. Each strike felt like a hammer blow driving another nail into the coffin of the family's fragile peace.

"We need to leave," Maya said, her voice dropping into a frantic whisper as she grabbed Clara’s arm. "Right now. Out the back door before the neighborhood wakes up."

"And go where, Maya?" Arthur asked, smoothly stepping away from the doorframe and dusting off his wet coat as if he were attending a polite dinner party rather than holding a family hostage. "The roads are washed out by the river overflow. Route 9 is closed until morning. You are entirely cut off from the rest of the world."

Marcus ignored his brother, dropping to his knees beside the fallen ledger. His fingers traced the embossed seal on the cover before he looked up at his mother with a look of profound betrayal.

"Why, Ma? Why bring him back into our lives after everything we sacrificed to keep him away?" Marcus asked, his voice breaking on the final word.

Evelyn didn't flinch under her son’s gaze. She slowly unbuttoned the top button of her grey cardigan, reached beneath her purple patterned dress, and pulled a heavy iron key on a silver chain from around her neck.

"Because Arthur didn't come back to kill us, Marcus," Evelyn said, holding up the key so that it caught the light of the hallway lamp. "He came back because the safe in the floorboards of the master bedroom is missing its second half."

Clara stared at the key, her mind racing back to the afternoon she had spent cleaning the attic last summer, when she had found an old floor plan of the house with a hidden compartment marked beneath the master closet.

"The safe," Clara said aloud, the realization dawning on her with terrifying clarity. "The safe you told me was just an old laundry chute."

"It was never a laundry chute," Arthur said, stepping closer to Evelyn and reaching out to take the heavy iron key from her withered fingers. Evelyn didn't pull away; she surrendered the key with a solemn nod of resignation. "It was the vault where our father stored the stolen securities from the bank heist back in nineteen-eighty-four."

Maya gasped, clapping her hands over her mouth as the terrible truth finally crystallized in the warm, suffocating air of the hallway. "You didn't run away from the mob, Marcus... you ran away from your own family."

May you like

"And now," Arthur said, turning the key over in his palm as he looked toward the dark staircase leading up to the bedrooms, "it’s time to cash out."
