Chapter 1 - The Threshold of Shattered Silence

"You cannot possibly expect me to keep pretending this family is built on anything other than lies, Maya! Look at what she is holding!" Marcus slammed his palm against the living room wall, the drywall shuddering under the force of his frustration as water drummed a relentless rhythm against the front glass.
Maya stepped forward, her orange button-down shirt damp from the humidity rolling in off the porch, her voice trembling yet sharp.
"Lower your voice, Marcus, do you want the entire neighborhood to know what we have buried for sixteen years? She’s standing right there in the rain!"
"Let them know!" Marcus shouted, his cream sweater bunching at his shoulders as he pointed a trembling finger at the doorway.
"Dad, stop yelling at her," Clara’s voice cut through the argument like cold steel, though her teeth chattered as she stood in the doorway, her dark denim jacket soaked over her maroon dress.
Grandmother Evelyn gripped the banewood of the staircase, her grey cardigan shifting over her purple patterned dress as she stared down with ancient, haunted eyes.
"Give me the paper, Clara," Evelyn whispered, the sound carrying an eerie weight that silenced the room instantly.
Clara looked down at her hand, where the small folded paper was slowly disintegrating from the relentless downpour, the ink bleeding through the fibers.
"No," Clara whispered back, her breath hitching in the cold air.
"You didn't read it, did you?" Marcus asked, his anger instantly evaporating into a suffocating terror.
"I read every single word," Clara replied, lifting her chin with a heartbreaking defiance that mirrored her mother’s.
"Put that down right now before you ruin the only protection we have left," Maya pleaded, stepping toward the threshold.
Clara slowly unfolded the wet paper, revealing the jagged handwriting of a man everyone in this house swore was dead.

"He’s not in Chicago, Mom," Clara said, her voice dropping to a terrifying whisper. "He’s parked right down the street."
