Chapter 4

The insult hit Evelyn like a physical blow, stripping away the last remnants of her condescending amusement. Her chest rose and fell rapidly beneath the fine fabric of her beige dress, and for a fleeting moment, she looked less like a polished socialite and more like a cornered animal. She looked toward Julian for rescue, but Julian’s eyes were locked on Marcus, calculating escape routes and legal contingencies. A man accustomed to controlling every variable was suddenly faced with an equation that defied his algorithms.

Marcus lowered his hand slightly, though his grip on the ceramic fragment never loosened. “The inheritance wasn't yours to gamble away, Julian. Dad’s will explicitly stated that the property and the trust were to be divided equally among all three of us. When you convinced Clara to sign those initial power-of-attorney forms while she was recovering from pneumonia two years ago, you committed fraud. I have the bank statements from the Cayman accounts right here in my tactical pack.”

At the mention of the offshore accounts, Julian’s composure finally shattered completely. A muscle twitched in his jaw, and he took a sharp step toward Marcus, forgetting for a moment the physical disparity between them. Julian was a man of words, contracts, and intimidation, but Marcus possessed the physical dominance of someone who had survived close-quarters combat. Julian stopped himself just inches from Marcus’s chest, realizing that physical aggression would only seal his defeat.

“You think a military tribunal cares about family squabbles over real estate?” Julian hissed, keeping his voice low so the neighbors wouldn't hear through the open windows. “If you expose those accounts, you destroy the entire family name. You ruin the company stock, and Clara gets dragged down in the fallout. You’ll bankrupt her right before she brings a child into the world.”

Clara stepped closer, joining the circle of confrontation. The fear that had paralyzed her earlier was entirely gone, replaced by a fierce, maternal protectiveness. “Let it burn, Julian,” she said fiercely. “I would rather raise my child in a modest apartment with nothing to our names than spend another single day breathing the poisonous air of this house. Every luxury you provided was paid for with my stolen future.”

Marcus cast a proud, validating glance at his sister. He had worried that Clara had been broken beyond repair by Julian’s psychological abuse, but witnessing her stand tall reminded him of the resilient girl they had both grown up with. The shared trauma of losing their parents had once bound them together, until Julian exploited that grief to consolidate power. Now, the family dynamics were shifting irrevocably, leaving Julian and Evelyn isolated on the losing side of a war they had started.
