Chapter 2

Marcus’s commanding voice hung in the tense air of the living room, stripping away the fragile veneer of normalcy Julian had spent years constructing. Julian slowly lowered his hand from his tie, his expression tightening into a mask of corporate indignation. He rose from the dining chair, the legs scraping against the hardwood with a harsh, protesting sound. Despite the tension, Julian maintained a terrifyingly calm demeanor, adjusting his jacket cuffs before taking a deliberate step toward the center of the rug. He viewed the world as a massive chessboard, and right now, Marcus was simply an erratic piece disrupting his calculated strategy.
Clara shrank back against the floral armchair, her breathing shallow as she cradled her unborn child. She was exhausted from months of psychological warfare orchestrated by Julian and executed with surgical precision by Evelyn. Evelyn, meanwhile, had dropped her playful demeanor, her jaw hardening as she stared daggers at the soldier in tactical gear. She stepped closer to Julian, her beige dress whispering against the stone floor, seeking the silent alliance they had forged in secret.
Marcus did not flinch under Julian’s approaching gaze. He held the fragment of pottery up between them like a shield and a weapon combined. The rough clay bore a faint, half-faded maker’s mark on its underside—a signature that Julian recognized instantly. Color drained from Julian’s usually impassive face, the carefully cultivated corporate mask slipping for a fraction of a second. That mark proved the pot was never a cheap flea-market find, nor was it an inconsequential domestic accident. It was the physical receipt of a financial transaction Julian had buried years ago, tied directly to the offshore accounts that funded Evelyn’s extravagant lifestyle while starving Clara of basic security.

“Put that down, Marcus,” Julian said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, low register. “You are completely out of your depth here. This is a private family matter, not a combat zone.”
Marcus took a slow step forward, planting his heavy boots firmly on the ground. “Everything here is a tactical disaster, Julian, and I’m done following rules designed to protect the guilty. We are going to talk about what happened to the estate trust, and we are going to start right now, before anyone else gets hurt.”
