Chapter 15: The Unbroken Thread

The key turned in the front lock at ten-fifteen. Arthur looked up from the kitchen table as the door opened and Clara and Helen stepped inside out of the cool autumn rain. They both looked tired, but there was an unmistakable lightness in their posture.
Helen shook her umbrella out in the hallway, leaning it against the stand before walking toward the guest room with her overnight bag. "The dinner was surprisingly tolerable, Arthur. And nobody noticed the watermark on the dress, in case you were wondering."
Clara hung her coat on the brass hook by the door, her dark red scarf draped neatly over the rack. She walked slowly down the hallway into the kitchen, stopping just inside the doorway. She looked at the yellow legal pad resting on the scarred wooden table, then up at Arthur’s calm, steady face.
"How was your evening?" Clara asked, her voice neutral but attentive.
Arthur stood up, keeping his hands resting lightly on the edge of the table. He didn't rush toward her, and he didn't offer any defensive explanations. He simply looked at her with the quiet honesty she had been asking for since the night began.
"I spent it figuring out what matters," Arthur said. "I wrote down what I need to change. Not for my boss, and not for Julian. For us."
Clara walked closer, her eyes scanning the neat lines of handwriting on the yellow pad before returning to his face. A small, subtle shift occurred in her expression—not a grand reconciliation, but the cautious beginning of a restored trust.
"We have a lot of work to do, Arthur," Clara said quietly, a faint hint of warmth returning to her voice.

"I know," Arthur replied, stepping forward to meet her halfway across the kitchen floor. "And this time, I'm not going anywhere."
The rain outside slowed to a gentle, steady mist, and for the first time in years, the apartment felt like a home where two people could finally begin again.
