Chapter 13: A Hard Realization

The rain began to tap against the apartment windows just as the streetlights flickered on below. The steady, rhythmic sound filled the room, washing away the last remnants of the afternoon's tension.
Arthur stood up and walked over to the window, watching the rain streak the glass in long, wavering lines. "Henderson told me I needed to decide where my priorities lie. He didn't fire me outright, but he made it clear that my position at the firm is hanging by a thread."
Clara looked at him, her expression softening just a fraction. "Are you going to fight for it?"
"I don't know," Arthur admitted honestly. For the first time in years, he didn't have a ready answer or a carefully constructed plan. "For a long time, I thought being responsible meant being the one who fixed everyone else's problems. If my father failed, I stepped in. If Julian crashed, I caught him. But in the process of catching everyone else, I dropped the only person who actually mattered."
Helen set her teacup down on the side table with a soft clink. "Recognition is the first step, Arthur, but it doesn't pay the rent or restore trust. Trust is like that dress downstairs—once it's stained, you can clean it, you can hide the mark, but everyone in the room knows it was damaged."
"I know," Arthur whispered, turning back from the window. He looked at Clara, seeing the quiet dignity in her posture, the way she carried herself despite the disappointment of the past twenty-four hours. "I’m not asking you to forgive me tonight, Clara. And I’m not asking you to pretend everything is fine."

Clara stood up, smoothing the front of her dark trousers. She walked over to the hallway table where the padded carrier bag containing the red dress rested. She picked it up, slipping her arm through the strap, and turned back to look at him one last time before leaving for the gallery.
"Helen and I will be back around ten," Clara said quietly. "Take the time tonight, Arthur. Really look at what you want your life to look like when you wake up tomorrow morning. Because I can't keep living in the hallway while you decide."
