Chapter 10

By 8:30 AM, the financial district was in a state of controlled panic. Breaking news banners flashed in red across every major financial news network, accompanied by soaring aerial footage of the Vance Global headquarters downtown. Federal agents in dark windbreakers had already cordoned off the main entrance, while reporters crowded behind police barricades, thrusting microphones toward bewildered junior executives and security guards who knew nothing more than what they were reading on their smartphones.
Elena sat in a plush armchair in the corner of the hotel lobby, sipping a cup of black coffee from a porcelain teacup. She wore dark sunglasses that shielded her eyes, though her posture remained as upright and composed as ever. To the casual observer, she was simply another upscale hotel guest reading the morning papers on her tablet, undisturbed by the chaos unfolding across the city.
Her phone buzzed quietly against the glass top of the small side table. She picked it up, unlocking the encrypted screen with a subtle swipe of her thumb. A single text message from her chief legal counsel blinked in the inbox: Federal search warrants executed at Vance Global headquarters. Public relations holding statement released. Media is framing you as the primary victim of Julian's hidden financial misconduct. Statement is proceeding exactly as scripted.
Elena locked the phone and set it back down, taking a calm, unhurried sip of her coffee. The script was playing out with mechanical precision. The media narrative was already shaping public perception, painting Julian as a rogue corporate criminal who had deceived not only the regulatory boards and his business associates, but his innocent, devoted wife as well. Sympathy statements from prominent industry figures were beginning to flood her personal email server, offering condolences for the betrayal she had supposedly suffered at the hands of a man she thought she knew.
A sleek black town car pulled up to the hotel's glass revolving doors, and two senior partners from her family's legal firm stepped out, scanning the lobby before spotting her in the corner. They walked over with quick, purposeful strides, their faces exhibiting the appropriate level of grave professional concern required for the occasion.
"Mrs. Vance," the lead attorney, a distinguished man in his late fifties named Harrison, said in a hushed, respectful tone as he approached her table. "We've secured the perimeter outside your residence, and the press corps has been successfully redirected away from your immediate family members. The Department of Justice has formally confirmed receipt of the audit ledgers, and they are treating Julian as the sole architect of the embezzlement scheme."
Elena looked up, removing her sunglasses and meeting his gaze with a carefully calibrated expression of tired, restrained grief. "And the holding company assets?"
"Safely transitioned into the philanthropic trusts, exactly as you instructed," Harrison murmured, leaning in slightly. "No regulatory body will be able to pierce the trust veil without a unanimous ruling from the international court in Geneva, which is legally impossible given the jurisdictional parameters we established. As far as the legal world is concerned, you are entirely clear of any liability."
"Good," Elena said quietly, her voice devoid of any triumph. "Ensure that all public communications emphasize my complete lack of awareness regarding Julian's offshore accounts. I want no ambiguity left for investigative journalists to exploit."

"Understood, Elena," Harrison replied, nodding respectfully. "Your private jet charter to Zurich is confirmed for tomorrow morning, should you wish to observe the transition from our European offices."
"I'll be on it," Elena said, sliding her sunglasses back onto her face. "Keep me updated on every development from the federal investigators. I want to know the moment Julian's flight logs are archived in international airspace."
