Chapter 3 - The Uninvited Knock

The doorbell chimed again, a short, clipped ring that felt far more like a demand than a polite request for entry from a neighbor or a late-night delivery driver.

"Nobody goes to the door," Mark whispered fiercely, dropping the useless remote and pulling Elena and Clara tightly behind his back as he inched toward the darkened hallway.

"Are you expecting someone?" Elena asked, her breath coming in shallow, ragged gasps against his shoulder, her fingers digging painfully into the fabric of his blue shirt.

"At three in the morning? No," Mark replied, his eyes fixed on the frosted glass panel of the front door where a broad, featureless shadow loomed large and ominous.

Clara clutched her headless pink bunny, her lips moving silently as if she were reciting a prayer or repeating words whispered to her by someone else in the dark.

"Clara, sweetheart, stop talking to yourself," Elena urged, kneeling down to grab her daughter's shoulders, but the little girl stared right past her mother toward the front porch.

"He says we left the back door unlocked," Clara said in a flat, monotone voice that didn't belong to her, her small pupils completely dilated in the dim hallway light.

A sharp twist of the exterior door handle rattled the deadbolt violently, metal scraping against metal as someone tested the security of the frame with brutal, casual strength.

Mark cursed under his breath, abandoning his caution as he sprinted the remaining steps to throw the deadbolt, locking it down with a heavy, satisfying mechanical click.

"We need to get out of here, out the back window, right now," Mark hissed over his shoulder, grabbing his car keys from the ceramic bowl on the entryway console.

"What about the car? The keys are right there," Elena said, pointing, but as Mark reached for them, the keys melted away into a pile of black, foul-smelling ash.

Mark stared at his empty palm in sheer disbelief, the metallic stench of sulfur and burnt copper instantly filling the hallway and making his eyes water uncontrollably.

"It's not just a hack, Elena. It's inside the walls, it's controlling the environment," Mark said, his voice dropping an octave as panic threatened to completely unravel his reason.

The heavy oak front door groaned as something massive leaned its full weight against it, the wood splintering slightly around the reinforced brass lock plate.

Clara pointed toward the kitchen ceiling, where a dark, wet stain was rapidly spreading across the white plaster, dripping a thick, crimson liquid onto the spotless floor.
