Chapter 13 - The Well of Echoes

"What do you want with us?" Mark demanded, stepping in front of Elena and Clara while keeping his hand resting firmly on the handle of the butcher knife in his belt.
"I don't want anything from you, Mark. I want what you took from me twenty years ago when you ran away from the fire," the duplicate replied, hopping down from the well.
The entity walked closer, the ash on his clothes dusting the damp grass beneath his feet with black smudges that instantly withered the surrounding weeds and ferns.
"I didn't take anything! I survived, and you're just a manifestation of my guilt, a psychological break!" Mark shouted defensively, though his voice lacked conviction.
"Is that what you told yourself every time you looked in the mirror? Every time you forgot Sarah's face and built a new life over her ashes?" the double asked softly.
Elena stared at Mark, the betrayal in her eyes cutting deeper than any physical weapon could have managed as she processed the horrific implications of the entity's words.
"Mark... is that true? Did you leave someone behind in that apartment?" Elena asked, her voice barely a whisper against the whispering wind in the pine canopy.
"It was an accident, Elena! The fire spread too fast, I couldn't save her!" Mark cried out, falling to his knees in the ash as the crushing weight of the truth finally broke him.
"You didn't even try to open the door, Mark. You locked it from the outside so the smoke wouldn't follow you into the stairwell," the duplicate said with chilling calm.
Clara walked over to the edge of the crumbling stone well, peering down into the dark, bottomless abyss where faint, golden lights flickered like trapped fireflies.
"She's down there, daddy. She's been waiting for you to return the urn," Clara said, turning around with her blank, unblinking eyes fixed squarely on Mark.
"No... I won't do it. I have a family now, I have a life," Mark sobbed, clutching the glass urn of ash to his chest as if shielding it from a predatory animal.
"You can't have a future built on a lie, Mark. The house, the hallway, the girl—they were all just waiting for you to pay your debts in full," the duplicate whispered.
The entity reached out and placed a heavy hand on Mark's shoulder, sending a paralyzing wave of cold fire through his veins that made his limbs entirely unresponsive.

"It's time to go home, Mark," the duplicate said as the ground beneath Mark's feet began to fracture and crumble, opening up a direct path down into the old water well.
