Chapter 6: The Ultimatum

Julian stared at the small black device in Elena’s hand, his expression shifting from furious arrogance to sudden, creeping unease. The color drained slightly from his face, leaving him looking pasty under the harsh overhead lighting. He knew the safe in his study. He knew the digital logs he had painstakingly tried to bury behind layers of encryption.

"Where did you get that?" Julian asked, his voice dropping an octave, losing its booming theatricality and turning dangerously sharp. He took a slow step forward, his hand reaching out as if he might snatch it from her grip.

Elena didn't flinch. She stepped back just enough to keep the hard drive out of his reach, her eyes locking onto his with unwavering resolve. "I got it from your private terminal upstairs, Julian. The one where you keep your shell companies, your inflated portfolios, and your little exit strategy documents."

Silence descended upon the foyer, heavy and suffocating. The reality of the situation crashed down on Julian with the force of a tidal wave. If those files leaked to the board of directors, the SEC, or the financial press, his empire would crumble by sunrise. His career, his wealth, his social standing—everything he had built on deceit and intimidation would vanish into ash.

"You don't know what you're looking at," Julian said, his tone shifting rapidly from intimidation to a desperate, oily persuasion. He lowered his hands, smoothing down his black shirt with trembling fingers. "Elena, listen to me. Business is complicated. The market is volatile right now. I made a few aggressive moves to protect our family's future. If you release those files, you destroy us both. You destroy Chloe's inheritance."

"Don't you dare bring Chloe into this," Elena snapped, her voice trembling with barely contained fury. "You forfeited the right to be her father the moment you raised your hand against her. And as for our future? I would rather live in a tent with my daughter than spend another second under the same roof as a monster who hides behind money to justify abuse."

Julian stared at her, realizing for the first time that his manipulation tactics no longer worked. The fear that had kept Elena compliant for years had been entirely burned away by his own violence. He was looking at a woman who had nothing left to lose and everything to protect.

"What do you want?" Julian whispered, the defeat finally bleeding into his voice.

"Simple," Elena replied, stepping closer, her voice steel-hard. "Total custody of Chloe. The house, unencumbered. And a complete financial settlement transferred by morning, or I send these files directly to the federal authorities and the press. You have until eight o'clock."
