Chapter 13: The Reckoning Arrives

The autumn wind whipped falling leaves across the cobblestone streets outside Elena’s downtown studio as she finalized the architectural blueprints for Marcus Sterling’s Victorian restoration project. The phone on her desk buzzed gently, flashing a news notification from a major financial wire service.
Elena paused, tapping the screen to open the alert.
“FALL OF A TITAN: JULIAN VANCE OUSTED FROM VANCE HOLDINGS AMID FEDERAL FRAUD INVESTIGATION.”
She read the headline twice, her expression remaining entirely calm. There was no surge of triumphant laughter, no bitter satisfaction, and no lingering fear. Just a profound, quiet sense of closure. The man who had once loomed like a terrifying monolith over her entire existence had finally been consumed by the very greed and arrogance he had used to terrorize his family. The system he had manipulated for years had turned on him with merciless efficiency.
The front door chimed, and Clara walked in, shaking the light autumn drizzle from her umbrella, holding two steaming paper cups of coffee. She glanced at Elena’s tablet, then at her sister’s serene face.
"You saw the news," Clara stated, setting one of the coffee cups down on the desk.
"I did," Elena replied, picking up the cup and inhaling the rich aroma of roasted beans.
"How do you feel?" Clara asked gently, studying her sister’s face for any sign of lingering trauma or emotional turbulence.
"Light," Elena said simply, taking a slow sip. "Like a heavy winter coat I didn't realize I was wearing has finally been taken off."
"He's facing real prison time, you know," Clara added, leaning against the edge of the desk. "The federal prosecutors are making an example of him. All his assets are frozen. He's entirely alone."
Elena looked out the large glass window, watching pedestrians rush by beneath colorful umbrellas. She felt a twinge of human pity, but no regret. Actions had consequences. Abuse had a cost. Julian had chosen his path of dominance and deceit, and he alone had to walk the final miles of it.

"He made his choices, Clara," Elena said quietly, turning her gaze back to her sister with a warm, steady smile. "And I’ve made mine. Now, let’s focus on the future. Marcus approved the final blueprints for the townhouses, and Chloe’s school play is tonight."
Clara smiled back, the last trace of worry vanishing from her eyes. "Come on, then. Let's go watch your daughter’s guardian dragon protect her castle."
