Chapter 9

The executive conference room on the top floor of Apex Systems offered a panoramic view of the city, but inside, the atmosphere was suffocatingly tense. Marcus Vance sat at the head of the sleek glass table, flanked by the head of IT security and corporate legal counsel. Clara and Maya sat opposite them, while Robert Miller paced nervously near the floor-to-ceiling windows, his tie slightly loosened.

The heavy oak conference room door clicked open, and the lead IT security technician stepped inside, placing a printed dossier directly in front of Marcus Vance.

Vance opened the folder, scanning the technical summary with practiced speed. The silence in the room was absolute, broken only by the faint hum of the building's ventilation system. After what felt like an eternity, Vance closed the folder and looked up, his expression a mask of cold disappointment.

"The cryptographic signatures match the local subnet routing logs from the night of the breach," Vance said, his voice cutting through the tension like a razor. "Furthermore, the administrative override used to initiate the data transfer was executed from terminal ID B-7, located in your home study, Robert. The login credentials used were assigned exclusively to your son, David."

Robert stopped pacing, his shoulders slumping heavily as all the fight drained out of him. He looked down at the polished glass table, unable to meet his boss's eyes. "He... he made a massive mistake with online gambling," Robert whispered hoarsely, his voice cracking. "He was drowning in debt. Some dangerous people were threatening him. He thought if he hacked into a low-level client vault and blamed Maya, it would buy him time to cover his tracks."

"And you knew," Maya said, her voice trembling with a mixture of heartbreak and vindication. "You knew the moment you saw the initial logs, and instead of helping me, you decided to sacrifice me to protect him and your precious reputation."

"What was I supposed to do, Maya?" Robert shouted defensively, his restraint finally snapping as he glared at her. "Your brother was facing prison! I had to protect this family!"

"You didn't protect this family, Dad," Maya replied, her eyes welling with unshed tears as she stood up from her chair. "You destroyed it the moment you slammed that door in my face and told me never to come back."

Vance cleared his throat sharply, silencing the emotional outburst. He looked directly at Robert Miller. "Robert, your actions constitute a severe breach of corporate governance, obstruction of an internal investigation, and gross professional misconduct. Effective immediately, you are suspended pending a formal board review for termination. As for your son, legal counsel will be contacting local authorities regarding the corporate espionage charges."

Maya felt a sudden rush of vindication, but there was no joy in it—only a profound, hollow emptiness. The truth had finally come to light, but the cost of winning had been the total collapse of her family.
