Chapter 5

Morning sunlight filtered through the sheer curtains of Aunt Clara’s guest room, painting geometric patterns across the wooden floorboards. Maya sat up in bed, her body stiff from sleeping in a strange room, but her mind remarkably clear. The adrenaline of the midnight digital raid had faded, leaving behind a cold, calculated focus. She dressed quickly in her blue jeans and a fresh sweater borrowed from Clara’s closet, leaving her grey hoodie draped over the back of a chair.

In the kitchen, the radio murmured softly with morning traffic reports while Clara prepared eggs and toast at the stove. The smell of coffee filled the air, grounding Maya in reality.

"Morning, kiddo," Clara said, turning around with a spatula in hand. "You look like you're plotting a hostile takeover."

"Something like that," Maya replied, taking a seat at the table. "I can't just sit here and wait for them to come after me. If my dad submits those forged logs to Apex Systems' legal department by noon today, they'll hand the evidence over to federal investigators. Once the feds get involved, clearing my name becomes ten times harder."

Clara placed a plate of food in front of Maya and sat down opposite her, sipping her own coffee. "So what’s your next move? You can't just walk back into that house. Your father made his stance painfully clear, and your mother won't let you past the foyer."

"I’m not going back to the house," Maya explained, cutting into her toast. "I’m going straight to Apex Systems. My father’s office, specifically. His chief of operations, Marcus Vance, has always been fair. If I present the raw packet logs directly to him before my father files the official internal report, Vance will have to pause the investigation and look at the actual server architecture."

Clara frowned, swirling the dark liquid in her mug. "Your father is the senior vice president of engineering there, Maya. Vance is an old friend of his. Do you honestly think he’s going to listen to a teenager over one of his top executives?"

"He has to," Maya insisted, her voice steady and resolute. "Vance prides himself on absolute corporate integrity. If there’s even a hint that an internal disciplinary matter is actually a frame job involving senior family members, compliance protocols force him to launch an independent audit."

After a moment of tense silence, Clara nodded slowly. "Alright. If you’re going to do this, you do it right. You don't go alone. I’m driving you there, and I’m walking you right up to the security desk."

Maya felt a sudden lump in her throat, deeply grateful for the unwavering support of the only adult in her family who still saw the truth. "Thank you, Aunt Clara."
