Chapter 2

The echoes of the man's mocking laughter died away against the corrugated metal shutters of the closed market stalls. Minh remained seated for a brief, deceptive moment, her gaze fixed upon the floating fragments of the fried egg in the dirty puddle. The tattooed man towered over her, crossing his massive arms to display the sprawling ink of dragons and thorned vines across his biceps. He sneered, his lip curling in undisguised contempt as he looked down at her dust-streaked uniform and exhausted frame. He stepped closer, invading her personal space with the deliberate intent to intimidate.

"You stink like filth!" the man barked, his voice dripping with venomous arrogance. "How dare you sit in the same place as me? Get lost, you miserable rat!"

Minh slowly exhaled. A thin plume of warm breath misted in the chilly midnight air, contrasting sharply with the frozen stillness of her posture. She did not scramble backward in terror as he expected. Instead, she planted her white sneakers firmly against the gritty pavement and began to rise. Her movement was agonizingly deliberate, an uncoiling spring of concentrated mass and silent fury. Inch by inch, she straightened her spine until she stood at her full height, her dark eyes locking onto his with a terrifying, unblinking intensity. The physical disparity between them was vast—he outweighed her by at least fifty pounds of solid muscle—yet the suffocating gravity of the alley had entirely shifted.

The man’s mocking grin faltered for a fraction of a second, replaced by a flicker of sudden, unacknowledged unease. He reached down instinctively to his belt, his fingers wrapping around the neck of a heavy green glass beer bottle he had been carrying loose in his palm. The thick glass glinted dully under the amber sodium light. He raised the bottle slightly, preparing to swing it as a blunt instrument to enforce his dominance over the quiet worker. But Minh was already moving. With blinding, predatory speed, her gloved hand shot forward and clamped around his forearm, pinning his wrist with a grip like a vice forged in the ironworks. Her glare was no longer just angry; it was absolute.

Before the man could process the sudden reversal of fortune, Minh dropped her center of gravity. She pivoted on her heel, brought her knee up in a devastatingly crisp arc, and launched a powerful flying side kick directly into the center of his muscular chest. The impact sounded like a wet sack of flour hitting a brick wall. The man let out a sharp, expelled gasp of air as the force lifted his massive frame off the ground. He crashed backward through the air, smashing violently into a stack of red plastic chairs and metal folding tables. Plastic cracked, aluminum legs sheared off with screeching protests, and extra bowls rattled across the concrete in a chaotic symphony of destruction.
