Chapter 14

By mid-afternoon, Minh was back at the construction site three blocks away from the river. The noise of the pneumatic drills and cement mixers washed over her like a familiar, grounding tide. As she walked through the chain-link gates in her grey work uniform, foreman Duc looked up from his clipboard, his expression a complicated mix of reluctant respect and lingering apprehension. The morning news broadcasts had featured the raid on Truong & Associates prominently, and while Duc didn't know all the details, the sudden downfall of the city's most powerful development firm sent a clear, unmistakable message through the entire local industry: the rules had changed, and exploitation was no longer a safe bet.
"You're back early, Minh," Duc said gruffly, shifting an unlit match between his teeth as she approached the tool shed.
Minh strapped her heavy tool belt around her waist, adjusted the buckle, and secured a fresh pair of rubberized work gloves over her hands. She looked Duc straight in the eye, her posture unyielding and calm. "The perimeter wall on the second tier still needs pointing up, foreman. And the scaffolding clamps on the northern face were never replaced. I'll finish the wall, but Tuan and I are inspecting the hardware first."

Duc hesitated, opening his mouth to issue a customary bark of managerial pushback, but the words died in his throat. He looked at her dust-streaked face, remembering the steel pipe, the parking garage, and the federal vans parked outside Truong headquarters. He slowly nodded, offering a rare, begrudging concession. "Take Tuan with you. Check every single bolt. I don't want any surprises today."
Minh gave a crisp, approving nod and turned toward the scaffolding stairs. As she climbed upward into the skeletal steel framework of the building rising against the skyline, she felt the steady rhythm of her own breathing matching the steady pulse of the city around her. She was not a victim, nor was she merely a laborer surviving day to day. She was the architect of her own survival, a woman who had cracked the concrete and found her own path through the dark.
