Chapter 2 - The Federal Incursion

The man in the dark trench coat strode across the pristine white marble floor, his heavy boots leaving damp footprints that nobody dared to point out. The elite guests of the Sterling household pressed back against the towering pillars, their elaborate silk gowns and custom tuxedos suddenly feeling less like armor and more like costumes for a tragedy. Julian stood frozen, his eyes darting from the federal seal on the manila folder to the impassive face of his wife. Elena had not even brushed the dust of the executioner's rope from her shoulders.
"Special Agent Vance, Federal Bureau of Investigation," the man announced, his voice flat and devoid of any seasonal cheer. He did not look at Julian. Instead, he stopped two paces away from Elena, offering a small, respectful nod that completely upended the social hierarchy of the room. "The asset has been secured, Mrs. Sterling. Every account associated with the conglomerate has been frozen under emergency counter-terrorism and white-collar statutes."
Julian found his voice, though it cracked slightly at the edges. "This is an outrage! You have no jurisdiction here. My family built this city! I demand to see a warrant, and I demand to know who authorized—"
Agent Vance turned his head slowly, fixing Julian with a gaze that chilled the room further than the draft from the open doors. "Your father’s shipping empire, your brother’s offshore shell companies, and your personal holdings are currently being raided simultaneously across three continents. You don't need a warrant, Mr. Sterling. You need a bankruptcy lawyer."
Elena stepped forward, the multiple layers of her ruined tulle dress whispering against the marble. The bleeding red stain near her collarbone stood out like a warning flag against the pastel fabric.
"You called me a discarded asset, Julian," Elena whispered, her voice carrying easily in the stunned silence. "Assets have value. You are simply a liability."
Julian lunged forward, his face contorted in sudden, animalistic rage. He reached for Agent Vance’s lapel, desperate to assert physical dominance where his legal standing had just evaporated. "I will ruin you!" he screamed, spittle flying from his lips. "I’ll have your badge before midnight!"
Before Vance could blink, two tactical officers emerged from the shadows of the foyer, their heavy gear clanking as they intercepted Julian. They pinned his arms behind his back with practiced efficiency, shoving him hard against one of the marble pillars. The pristine white bow tie slipped askew, hanging limply against his black tuxedo.
Elena watched the struggle with chilling detachment. She slowly lowered her smartphone, the screen still glowing with an encrypted interface that displayed a rapidly descending corporate valuation chart for Sterling Industries.
"Don't waste your energy on the agent, Julian," Elena said, turning her back on him as she walked toward the grand staircase. "You'll need every ounce of breath you have left to explain to your mother why she's losing her ancestral home by dawn."
Julian struggled against the grips of the federal officers, his chest heaving as he stared at the retreating figure of his wife. "Elena! You can't do this! We are bound by—"
"By blood and contracts," Elena interrupted, pausing on the third step without turning around. She raised her hand, casually slipping a diamond ring off her finger and letting it drop to the marble floor, where it bounced twice before rolling into a floor grate. "And I have just voided both."

From the open front doors, the sound of sirens began to wail through the rainy night, perfectly synchronized with the heavy thud of the mansion's main security gates locking from the outside.
