Chapter 2 - The Metallic Taste

The red notification banner continued to cast a harsh, pale blue light across Clara’s terror-stricken face. The photograph on the screen wastimestamped precisely three minutes ago. In the image, Aunt Beatrice, Elena, and the rest of the extended family were posing with exaggerated, theatrical smiles, raising their crystal glasses toward the multi-tiered birthday cake. But the angle of the security capture was impossible. It hung from a vantage point directly above the center of the ceiling, hovering in mid-air where no smoke detector or light fixture existed. Clara’s breath caught in her throat as she stared back and forth between the digital screen and the living people sitting around the mahogany table.

“Who sent this?” Clara demanded, her voice dropping into a dangerous, metallic whisper that sliced through the dining room's oppressive silence. She rose slowly from her kneeling position beside Vanessa’s unmoving body, keeping her tall, rigid frame positioned between her daughter and the rest of the family.

Elena sniffled loudly, dragging the back of her manicured hand across her tear-stained cheek. The red dress she wore shimmered under the chandelier, catching the warm light in a way that suddenly looked far too vibrant, almost mocking the grim reality unfolding on the floor.

“Why are you acting like a lunatic, Clara?” Elena snapped, her grief vanishing instantly, replaced by a sharp, venomous edge. “It’s just a family gathering. A milestone birthday. We wanted to surprise little Vanessa, and you come barging in here like a wild animal, tracking mud over imported rugs, screaming about blood that isn’t even real!”

Clara stared at her cousin in sheer disbelief. She slowly lifted her right hand, holding up her blood-smeared fingers for the entire room to see. The dark, viscous fluid glistened under the bright lights, smelling heavily of copper and something sickeningly sweet, like crushed almonds.

“You call this frosting, Elena?” Clara whispered, taking a slow step toward the table. “Look at her. Look at my daughter!”

Before anyone could reply, the multi-tiered birthday cake in the center of the table began to shift. The heavy wooden base groaned under the weight of the elaborate pastries, and a thick, dark red syrup started to ooze from the very bottom tier, slowly pooling across the white linen tablecloth.

Aunt Beatrice stepped forward, her face draining of all color. She reached out a trembling hand toward the bleeding cake, her eyes widening in sudden, profound horror.

“No,” Beatrice breathed, her voice trembling uncontrollably. “We weren’t supposed to cut it yet.”

Clara lunged forward, shoving the multi-tiered cake entirely off the edge of the mahogany table. It crashed to the floor with a deafening roar of shattering porcelain and spraying crimson liquid, revealing something horrifying hidden beneath the pastry layers.
