Chapter 1 - The Broken Celebration

The heavy oak door of the dining room slammed against the wainscoting, vibrating the crystal glassware on the mahogany sideboard. Clara burst into the room, her boots tracking damp earth across the expensive Persian rug. Her dark curly hair was tied back in a frantic, loose knot, and the green military-style shirt she wore was stained with dark oil and sweat. At the center of the room sat a magnificent, multi-tiered birthday cake, its wax candles burning down in long, colorful drips. Family members sat frozen around the long dining table, staring in stunned silence at the disruption. Clara locked her terrified eyes on her six-year-old daughter, Vanessa, who lay motionless with her head pillowed on her arms right beside the frosted pastry tiers.

“Don't touch Vanessa!” Clara screamed, her voice cracking with a raw, desperate panic that tore through the festive air.

Aunt Beatrice stood up slowly from her seat, her short gray hair catching the warm glow of the chandelier. She stepped forward, her face lined with age and weary authority, and placed a firm, reassuring hand on Clara’s trembling shoulder.

“Let her calm down,” Aunt Beatrice said softly, her voice an anchor in the sudden storm. “She’s just exhausted from the party games.”

Clara shoved Beatrice’s hand away, her eyes wild as she dropped to her knees beside the little girl. “You don't understand! She shouldn't be sleeping like this. None of you should be here!”

Across the table, Elena, wearing a brilliant red dress, pressed a trembling hand against her mouth. Tears spilled over her lower lashes, tracing hot paths down her powdered cheeks as she looked from Clara to the silent child.

“She took my cake!” Elena sobbed, her voice trembling with an odd, disproportionate grief that felt entirely out of place given the terror in the room.

Clara ignored her cousin entirely, sliding her fingertips beneath Vanessa’s small jaw. The child’s skin felt unnaturally cold, like smooth river stone. Clara pressed her ear to the little girl’s back, straining to hear the familiar rhythm of her breathing. There was nothing. Just a terrifying, absolute silence that defied the flickering flames of the birthday candles. Slowly, Clara pulled her hand back, staring at her fingertips in disbelief. A smear of dark, metallic liquid coated her skin—it wasn’t chocolate frosting from the multi-tiered cake. It was fresh, viscous blood.

Before Clara could draw enough breath to scream, her smartphone buzzed violently in the deep pocket of her dark trousers. She pulled it out with shaking hands, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. The glowing screen displayed a brand-new push notification from an unknown sender, accompanied by a high-resolution image file. It was a live security photo taken from directly above the dining room table, showing every single family member smiling broadly—except for Vanessa, whose head was already resting unmoving against the white tablecloth.

“Your Cousin recorded dinner,” the text message read.
