Chapter 6: An Unexpected Visitor

The doorbell of the downtown loft chimed softly, breaking the heavy concentration in the room. Marcus looked up from the laptop, raising an eyebrow. "Expecting company?"

"No," Alex replied, frowning as he set his untouched glass of bourbon down on the coaster. "Unless it's room service from that Italian place down the block."

Alex walked across the spacious living room and pulled open the heavy wooden door. Standing in the hallway was a woman in her late thirties, wearing a simple blue denim jacket and carrying a canvas tote bag. It was Clara, Sophie’s mother. Her face was etched with exhaustion from working a grueling double shift, but her eyes burned with a fierce, protective maternal instinct.

"Mr. Alex," Clara said, her voice tight with nervous energy. "I hope I’m not intruding. I came as soon as my shift ended. Sophie told me what happened at the chapel today."

"Please, come in, Clara," Alex said warmly, stepping aside to let her enter the loft. "You're never an intrusion. Can I get you some water, coffee?"

"No, thank you, I'm fine," Clara replied, walking into the living room and nodding respectfully to Marcus. She turned her attention back to Alex, her hands nervously twisting the straps of her tote bag. "I just... I needed to make sure my daughter didn't cause a disaster for you. When she told me she interrupted your wedding to accuse your bride of cheating, my heart stopped. I was terrified she had imagined it, or that she misunderstood some adult conversation."

Alex closed the door and walked over to join them, his expression softening significantly. "Clara, have a seat. Let me put your mind completely at ease."

Clara sat down on the edge of the grey velvet sofa, her shoulders tense. "She didn't lie, did she?"

"Not a single word," Marcus answered for Alex, sliding the laptop forward to reveal the financial printouts and a few digital photographs they had managed to pull up of Elena and Julian Vance together. "Your daughter is remarkably observant, Clara. In fact, she probably saved Alex from losing everything he’s worked his entire life to build."

Clara stared at the screen, her eyes widening as the reality of the situation sank in. She let out a long, shuddering breath, her tension finally melting into sheer relief. "Thank God," she whispered, pressing a hand to her chest. "Sophie has always been different. She doesn't play with dolls like other kids; she watches people. She reads body language. But I was so worried that sticking her nose into adult business would bring trouble down on our heads."

"Trouble found us a long time ago," Alex said firmly, sitting across from her. "Sophie just brought it out into the light. Now, we need to talk about how we protect her, and how we expose Elena once and for all."
