Chapter 2: The Seed of Doubt

The sudden drop in temperature inside the chapel seemed to freeze the very breath in Alex's lungs. Kneeling on the polished oak floor, he held the small wedding ring tightly in his left hand, its metal edge pressing into his palm. He looked deeply into Sophie's tear-filled eyes, ignoring the collective intake of breath from the assembled guests behind him. Elena’s hurried footsteps echoed against the stone floor as she closed the distance between the altar and the pews, her silk train whispering a nervous rustle against the wooden benches.
"Why do you think that, Sophie?" Alex asked gently, his voice remarkably steady despite the chaotic storm raging within his chest.
Sophie clutched her stuffed rabbit even tighter, the gray fabric damp with her tears. She looked up at him with absolute, unwavering earnestness. "I saw her," the girl whispered, her words cutting through the tense silence like a sharp blade. "I saw her in the garden behind the country club. She kissed the other man."
A sharp gasp escaped Elena’s lips before she could catch herself. She lunged forward, her hands hovering helplessly in the air as if she wanted to physically pull Sophie away from Alex. "She's just a child, she's confused," Elena stammered, her voice pitching up an octave, stripped of its usual melodic composure. "Alex, look at me. You know how children have wild imaginations. She watches those ridiculous television dramas with her aunt. She doesn't understand what she's seeing."
Alex did not look at Elena. He kept his gaze locked on Sophie, whose small chin quivered with the immense burden of a truth she should never have had to carry. He knew Sophie's capacity for observation. The girl rarely spoke unless it mattered, and she never lied. The panic radiating from Elena’s pores was far more convincing than any scripted defense she could offer.

"She called him baby," Sophie continued, her voice gaining a haunting clarity that made the hairs on the back of Alex's neck stand on end. "She said you trust her, and that she was just waiting for the wedding gifts to clear before she could finally leave you."
The brutal honesty of the child's statement hit Alex like a physical blow. The ring in his hand felt like a burning coal. He slowly stood up from the floor, towering over the aisle, his dark eyes finally shifting to meet the woman he had trusted with his heart, his home, and his future. The illusion was shattered.
