Chapter 5

Back at the estate, the storm had finally broken, leaving behind a pristine, blinding blanket of white that stretched across the manicured lawns. Inside the warm study, Clara stood by the mahogany desk, staring down at the heavy oak floorboard beneath the Persian rug. Julian had left very specific instructions before the federal agents arrived. She knelt, pulled back the carpet, and lifted the loose floorboard to reveal a hidden compartment. Inside sat a sleek, encrypted hard drive and a hand-written ledger containing the names and encrypted communication channels of every whistleblower within the logistics conglomerate.
Clara’s hands shook as she lifted the ledger. She was not a corporate warrior; her world had consisted of art galleries, ballet recitals, and charity galas. Yet, looking at a framed photograph of Julian and Lily on the mantelpiece, her fear hardened into a cold, unbreakable resolve. The board of directors had underestimated her, assuming she would quietly retreat into the background while her husband took the blame. They did not know about the late-night phone calls Julian had taken in his study, or the quiet conversations they shared over midnight coffee when the corporate pressure became too heavy to bear. She knew where the bodies were buried metaphorically, and she had the keys to unlock the vault.

Her first move required precision. She dialed a secure number from her personal mobile phone, using an encrypted messaging app Julian had installed weeks prior. The call connected after three rings. A gruff, cautious voice answered on the other end: "State your purpose." Clara took a deep breath, steadying her voice. "This is Clara Vance. My husband sent me. We need to talk about the Port of Seattle safety manifests from the third quarter." A heavy silence hung on the line for several long seconds before the voice replied, "I thought your husband was in custody. They’re watching every line connected to him."
"They are watching his lines, not mine," Clara retorted sharply, her tone leaving no room for argument. "Meet me at the public library in downtown Seattle tomorrow at noon. Wear a grey coat. Come alone." She hung up before the contact could reply, dropping the phone onto the desk with a soft clatter. She walked over to the tall draped windows, looking out over the silent winter landscape. Lily was upstairs, still sleeping soundly under her heavy quilt, unaware that her mother was stepping onto a battlefield. Clara touched the diamond ring on her finger, whispering a silent promise into the empty room. Julian had protected her for a decade; now, it was her turn to protect him, no matter the cost.
