Chapter 3

The heavy oak doors of the estate swung outward, revealing a world swallowed entirely by the blizzard. Driving snow swirled in the amber glow of the porch lamps, creating a blinding white wall that swallowed the agents' waiting sedan. Julian took a deep breath of the freezing air, the shock of it clearing the fog of exhaustion from his mind. He wore his black wool overcoat over his tuxedo, the dark fabric providing a stark contrast against the blinding snow. Clara walked beside him down the stone steps, her gold sequin dress covered by a heavy velvet wrap, shielding her from the biting wind. Lily watched from the doorway, wrapped in a heavy quilted blanket held by the elderly housekeeper, Mrs. Gable, who had served the family for decades.

The lead agent opened the rear door of the black sedan, gesturing quietly for Julian to enter. Before sliding into the vehicle, Julian turned back to look at his home. The estate stood like a fortress of light against the encroaching darkness of the woods. For ten years, that house had been a sanctuary where corporate greed and public scandal could not touch them. Now, it was simply a place where two people he loved more than life itself were left to guard the fort in his absence. Clara stepped close, ignoring the swirling snow, and pressed her forehead against his chest for one final, desperate moment.

"Don't take the fall for them, Julian," she pleaded softly, her breath forming a cloud of white vapor in the freezing air. "The truth has to matter." Julian kissed the top of her head, tasting the cold moisture of the snow mixed with her tears. "The truth is all we have left, Clara. That’s why I have to go with them. If I run, they win and we lose everything—not just our freedom, but our name." He pulled away gently, stepping into the back seat of the car. The leather interior was cool and smelled faintly of rain and coffee. As the door closed with a heavy, muffled thud, the exterior world was instantly muted.

Through the frosted window, Julian watched Clara wave a single, trembling hand, her face illuminated by the flashing hazard lights of the federal vehicle. Beside her, Mrs. Gable held Lily close, shielding the little girl from the wind. The car shifted into gear, its heavy tires crunching over the fresh layer of ice as it began the slow descent down the winding driveway. Julian rested his head against the cold glass, watching the lights of his home shrink into distant amber dots until the blizzard consumed them entirely. The long winter had truly begun, and he was heading directly into its frozen heart, armed only with documents and a quiet resolve.
