Chapter 15

The afternoon sun cast long, golden rays across the historic downtown plaza as Clara, Arthur, and Officer Miller walked out the grand front doors of city hall. The investigation was officially underway, the municipal fraud had been brought to light, and the historical records of the Northern Continental line were slated for permanent exhibition in the city museum. Arthur paused at the top of the stone steps, taking a deep breath of the crisp autumn air. He pulled the vintage ticket he had retrieved from the briefcase during their first encounter out of his coat pocket, running his thumb over the perforated edge one last time. He looked down at the plaza below, where a modern commuter train rumbled quietly along the elevated track overhead, its whistle blowing a clean, steady note that signaled safe passage into the future.
Clara stood beside him, her hands tucked into the pockets of her denim jacket, watching the train fade into the distance. She felt the ghost of her father standing right beside them, approving of the work they had finished together. Miller offered a respectful nod to both of them before turning back toward his precinct, his duty shift finally coming to an end. Arthur looked at Clara with a peaceful smile that reached all the way to his tired eyes. “We waited a long time for this train, Clara,” the old man whispered softly. Clara smiled back, her own heart lighter than it had ever been. “We did, Arthur,” she replied, as the afternoon breeze swept past them, carrying the promise of tomorrow across a city that had finally remembered how to listen.
