Chapter 4 - Shadows in the Wine Cellar

The darkness of the hallway seemed to pulse, swallowing the amber light from the dining room before it could reach the heavy oak door of the wine cellar. Julian remained frozen on his knees, his expensive tuxedo straining against his broad shoulders as he stared down the empty corridor. The mention of the cellar sent a fresh wave of dread through his stomach. That room was supposed to be secure, accessible only by a digital keypad code that only he and Clara possessed.
“There’s nobody down there,” Clara said quickly, though her voice lacked conviction. She stood up, smoothing the sparkling fringe of her silver dress with shaking hands. “The security system would have triggered an alert on my phone if the biometric lock had been bypassed.”
“Security systems can be disabled by anyone who knows the master override code,” Julian said without turning back to look at her. His eyes remained fixed on Lily, who was slowly stroking the worn ear of her brown teddy bear. “And Marcus helped me install the system three years ago.”
Lily slid off her chair, her white dress rustling softly against the floorboards. She clutched her bear tighter to her chest and took two deliberate steps toward the dark hallway, her small patent-leather shoes clicking against the hardwood with an eerie rhythm.
“He’s been down there since four o’clock,” Lily whispered, her voice carrying an unnatural weight that made Julian’s skin crawl. “I watched him carry the heavy metal box through the side pantry entrance. He didn’t use the keypad. He used the physical key you keep hidden behind the grandfather clock, Daddy.”
Julian stood up slowly, his muscles tense. He walked over to the mahogany sideboard and pulled open a velvet-lined drawer, his fingers searching blindly beneath a stack of silver serving spoons. The small brass key was gone. The hiding place he had used for a decade had been compromised, and the realization hit him like a physical blow. Marcus wasn’t just an outside threat managing their financial ruin; he was physically inside their home, waiting for the right moment to finalize the transition of power—and assets.
“Clara, stay here with her,” Julian ordered, his tone leaving no room for argument as he reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a heavy gold-plated letter opener, using it as a makeshift weapon.
“Julian, don’t go down there alone,” Clara cried out, taking a step forward, her face twisted in genuine terror. “If Marcus is down there, it means the federal agents aren't far behind him. We’re walking into a trap!”

Julian paused at the threshold of the dark hallway, casting one last look back at his daughter. Lily was standing perfectly still beneath the grand chandelier, the small bag of white powder sitting abandoned on the table behind her. She looked up at him, her lips parting slightly as she mouthed three silent words that made his blood run cold.
