Chapter 14

The sharp, wailing blast of the police siren cut through the damp night air, making little Leo startle and let out a sharp, frightened cry. The cruiser’s red and blue emergency lights painted the wet pavement in flashing, chaotic strokes as it rolled to a sudden stop right behind Elena’s abandoned sedan.
Two uniformed officers stepped out of the vehicle instantly, their hands resting cautiously on the utility belts at their waists. The lead officer, a tall man with sharp graying hair and a heavy badge, strode forward with authority.
"Step away from the vehicle, sir. Hands where we can see them," the officer commanded, his flashlight beam cutting straight into Mark’s face.
Mark raised his hands immediately, dropping the manila envelope onto the roof of the sedan. "Officer, thank God you're here. My name is Mark Vance. My mother just fled the scene, but I have proof—she abducted and trafficked our child from Mercy General Hospital six months ago!"
The officer paused, flashing his badge light down at the stack of photographs and the adoption documents spread across the car roof. He looked from Mark to me, taking in my disheveled appearance, my torn navy sweatshirt, and the infant cradled tightly in my arms.
"Mr. Vance? We received a distress call from this address ten minutes ago," the officer said, his tone softening slightly as he stepped closer. "Dispatch also received an anonymous tip claiming that an unstable woman inside this house was attempting to flee with a stolen child."
"That was a lie! That was Elena!" I shouted, stepping forward into the harsh beam of the flashlight, my voice cracking with desperation. "She framed me! She forged my signature on custody papers, locked us in the nursery, and planted those adoption files to cover her own crimes!"
The officer held up a hand to calm me down, speaking into his shoulder mic. "Backup is en route to intercept the suspect's vehicle on Route 9. But ma'am, I need to ask you—is that the infant in question?"
"Yes," Mark answered before I could speak, his voice trembling as he gestured toward Leo. "According to these documents my mother left behind... this isn't even our biological son. She switched our real baby at the hospital six months ago and gave him to a broker."
The officer’s expression hardened into a grim mask of professional gravity. He stepped back and signaled his partner. "We need to secure the premises and take those documents into evidence immediately. And we'll need to call child protective services to verify the infant's DNA and medical records."
"No, you can't take him away from me!" I cried out, instinctively pulling Leo backward against my chest, shielding him with my arms. "I don't care about DNA right now! I've raised him every single day of his life! He is my son!"
"Clara, let them do their job," Mark whispered gently, placing a trembling hand on my shoulder. His eyes were bloodshot and filled with a profound, shattering sorrow. "We have to find our real child. We have to bring him home."
Before the officer could step forward to take the documents from the car roof, his radio crackled to life with a loud, static-filled dispatch announcement.
"Unit Four, be advised. We intercepted the suspect's vehicle heading southbound on Route 9. But... the driver isn't Elena Vance."

The officer froze, bringing his mic to his mouth. "Repeat that, dispatch? Who is driving the vehicle?"
"It's not the mother," the dispatcher's voice replied through the static, cold and clear. "The driver is a federal marshal carrying an arrest warrant for Clara Vance."
