Chapter 1

The nursery smelled of lavender baby wash and stale panic. Elena’s hand was tangled deep in my hair, pulling my head back so hard my neck popped.
"You will answer for this!" Elena screamed, her voice cracking with a mixture of betrayal and maternal fury.
Her face was inches from mine, the veins in her temples bulging beneath her short blonde hair. I gasped for air, my hands instinctively flying up to claw at the dark blue fabric of her zip-up jacket.
"Let go of me, Elena! You are out of your mind!" I yelled back, my voice shaking with a mix of terror and righteous anger as I tried to twist away from her grip.
Across the room, the wooden baby crib rattled. Inside, our six-month-old infant son, Leo, began to wail, startled by the violence of the ambush. He was wearing his favorite white onesie patterned with tiny blue stars.
Mark burst through the bedroom doorway, his breathing ragged. He was wearing his usual gray t-shirt and blue jeans, his athletic frame tense as he assessed the chaotic scene.
"Stop it! Both of you, what the hell is wrong with you?" Mark shouted, lunging forward to pry Elena’s fingers loose from my dark hair.
I stumbled backward, rubbing my scalp where stray strands had been ripped out. I looked at Mark, expecting him to defend me, but his eyes were cold and distant.
"She tried to take him, Mark. I walked in and caught her red-handed," Elena panted, adjusting her jacket while glaring at me with unadulterated hatred.
"I did no such thing!" I protested, my chest heaving beneath my navy sweatshirt with its faded white lettering. "I was just checking on Leo before we left for the hospital."
"Don't lie to him, Clara," Elena snarled, stepping protectively in front of the crib. "I saw the hospital discharge papers in your purse. You were packing his clothes."
Mark turned to me slowly, his expression hardening into a mask of pure suspicion. "Clara? Is that true? Did you sign the relocation forms?"

Before I could defend myself against the devastating accusation, my phone buzzed violently in my pocket with a text from an unknown number containing a photo of my birth certificate altered with a forged signature.
