Chapter 6: The Awakening Upstairs

Back in the secure apartment above the lower parking level, Clara stirred beneath the heavy cashmere blanket. The sedative was wearing off, leaving her with a dull, throbbing ache across her ribs and abdomen, but the blind panic that had gripped her in the bedroom had receded, replaced by a quiet, steely realization. The female medic stood nearby, offering a glass of cool water with a straw. Clara took a few slow sips, her blue eyes clear and focused as she pushed herself up into a sitting position.

“Where is my father?” Clara asked, her voice steady despite the lingering pain.

“He is downstairs, dealing with the situation,” the medic replied professionally. “He wanted you to rest, Miss Morano.”

“I’m done resting,” Clara said, swinging her legs over the edge of the sofa. She winced slightly as her bruised torso stretched, but she refused to show weakness. She slipped her feet into a pair of soft house slippers and stood up, smoothing the rumpled silk of her slip dress. She walked toward the internal staircase that led directly down into the reinforced warehouse office where Vincent was holding Leo and Marcus.

She descended the metal stairs quietly, her footsteps masked by the hum of the facility’s climate control system. As she reached the landing, she paused just behind a partial brick pillar, remaining out of sight while she absorbed the scene playing out below.

Her father was sitting in the leather armchair, looking like a king presiding over a courtroom of fools. Marcus was still kneeling on the concrete, defiant and bruised, while Leo sat trembling in the metal chair nearby, looking like a ghost of the man she thought she knew.

“You think my assets are failing, Marcus?” Vincent was saying, his voice smooth and unhurried. “You read a few forged financial reports supplied by our competitors and thought you had struck gold. You didn't realize that those reports were planted specifically to draw rats out of the woodwork.”

Marcus’s defiant smirk faltered for a fraction of a second. “What are you talking about?”

“I’m talking about a trap,” Vincent replied calmly. “For six months, I’ve known there was a leak in the logistics division. I needed to know who was coordinating with the syndicate downtown. Leo was stupid enough to take the bait, and you were arrogant enough to come collect in person.”

Clara listened from the shadows, a complex mix of emotions washing over her. For months, she had believed Leo was simply a young man swept up in the whirlwind of her family’s dangerous world. Now, watching him weep and shake as her father dismantled his entire existence, she felt a profound sense of foolishness for ever trusting him. But alongside the disappointment was a fierce, protective instinct—not for Leo, but for the child growing inside her. That child would not inherit this cycle of betrayal and violence.

She stepped out from behind the pillar, her silk slip dress shimmering in the harsh warehouse light. The sound of her heels clicking against the concrete caused all three men to turn instantly.
