Chapter 2: Cold Transit

The private courtyard of the Morano estate was vast, paved with dark cobblestones that glistened under a light drizzle. Sleek black luxury sedans idled near the grand entrance, their exhaust pipes puffing faint white plumes into the chill midnight air. Vincent carried Clara down the sweeping stone steps with deliberate, measured steps, ignoring the cold mist that kissed his silver hair. His bodyguards flanked him closely, maintaining a protective perimeter while two other security operatives ushered Leo and Elena down the stairs behind them. Leo was shivering, not just from the damp autumn air, but from the terrifying realization of his precarious position. He stumbled slightly in his soft-soled slippers, but a firm hand on his shoulder from a bodyguard kept him moving forward. Elena walked beside Leo, her velvet robe clutched tightly around her throat, her eyes wide with a mixture of fear and suppressed anger. She cast a desperate glance toward her husband, but Vincent’s profile was carved from stone; he refused to acknowledge her presence.

Clara rested her head against Vincent’s chest, her breathing finally beginning to slow as the familiar, grounding scent of her father’s cologne washed over her. The harsh reality of what had happened inside that bedroom hung between them, unspoken yet overwhelmingly heavy. Vincent opened the rear door of the lead vehicle himself, gently easing Clara onto the supple leather seat. He tucked a cashmere blanket around her legs, ensuring her bruised belly was protected from any accidental pressure. As he closed the door to keep her insulated from the damp cold, he turned his attention back to the courtyard.

Leo was being guided toward the second vehicle. Panic flickered across the young man’s face, breaking through his initial shock. “Please, you’re making a mistake,” Leo stammered, his voice rising slightly before a stern look from the lead bodyguard silenced him. “I didn’t do this. You have to listen to me for five minutes.”

Vincent stepped into Leo’s personal space, towering over him by several inches. The older man’s eyes were like chips of dark ice, devoid of any warmth or theatrical anger. His anger was terrifyingly quiet, the kind that preceded a storm of catastrophic proportions. “Get in the car, Leo,” Vincent said, his voice terrifyingly calm. “We are going to a place where we can talk without distractions. And trust me, when we get there, you will have all the time in the world to explain.”

Elena stepped forward, her voice trembling. “Vincent, this is insane. You can’t just abduct him based on an assumption—”

“Elena,” Vincent interrupted, turning his head just enough to pin her with a silencing glare. “Go back inside. This family matter is closed to you for tonight.”

Without another word, Vincent climbed into the front passenger seat of the lead car, slamming the heavy door shut. The convoy of dark vehicles slipped silently through the iron gates of the estate, merging into the deserted city highway, carrying secrets, lies, and a reckoning that had been decades in the making.
