Chapter 6

The shouting match among the board members lasted precisely seven minutes before Arthur banged his heavy brass pen against the wooden table, calling for order. The reality of their financial peril had settled in with brutal efficiency. Without Clara’s proprietary software and the backing of the trust, Sterling Holdings was not just insolvent; it was a criminal liability. One by one, the directors raised their hands to vote in favor of immediate receivership and the removal of Julian Sterling as Chief Executive Officer. Julian watched the vote with a vacant, hollow stare, his mouth slightly open as the scaffolding of his entire life collapsed under the weight of undeniable truth.

When Arthur officially announced the unanimous vote, Julian collapsed back into his leather chair, his hands trembling as he gripped the armrests. He looked across the table at Clara, the bravado completely drained from his posture. “Clara... please,” he whispered, his voice cracking with a pathetic vulnerability that should have invoked sympathy, but instead sounded hollow. “We were together. We built a life. You can’t just throw me out like trash. What am I supposed to do?”

Clara looked at him with steady, unblinking green eyes. The irony of his words hung heavily in the air—it was the exact sentiment she had felt when he threw cash on a hotel floor and told her to go buy her own lunch. “You are going to face the consequences of your own actions, Julian,” Clara replied evenly. “You built your success on lies, manipulation, and the exploitation of everyone around you. I didn’t throw you out. I simply stopped holding you up.” She closed her leather folio, picked up her pen, and slid her chair back from the table.

As Clara stood up, Mara stood beside her, collecting the remaining documents. Arthur cleared his throat, looking up at Clara with a mixture of professional respect and lingering apprehension. “Ms. Vance... the board assumes you will be stepping in to restructure the core assets under a new corporate entity?” Arthur asked carefully. “Under our terms, yes,” Clara replied. “The company will be rebranded as Vance Global Solutions. Current employees whose salaries were frozen will be reinstated immediately with back pay. Anyone complicit in Julian’s ledger manipulations will be handed over to federal investigators.”

Julian flinched at the mention of federal investigators, his eyes darting toward the double doors as if expecting federal agents to burst through at any second. Victoria, who had been waiting anxiously in the hallway, pushed the doors open just a crack, peering in with mounting panic as she realized the golden goose had not just stopped laying eggs—it had been slaughtered. Clara walked past Julian one last time, pausing briefly beside his chair. “Pack your desk, Julian,” she whispered softly so only he could hear. “And try buying your own lunch today.” With that, she turned and walked out of the boardroom, leaving the broken empire behind her.
