Chapter 10

Back at Vance Global Solutions, Clara was deep into reviewing a comprehensive audit report prepared by Mara when an unexpected visitor arrived at reception. It was a young woman in her early twenties, wearing a simple business-casual outfit, her hands visibly shaking as she clutched a thick manila folder to her chest. Mara intercepted her at the front desk, but upon hearing the visitor's name—Sarah Jenkins, a former junior accountant at Sterling Holdings—Mara immediately escorted her directly to Clara’s office. Sarah looked terrified, her eyes darting nervously around the minimalist workspace before landing on Clara’s calm, steady gaze.

“Ms. Vance... I’m sorry to just walk in like this, but I didn’t know who else to go to,” Sarah stammered, her voice trembling as she set the manila folder down on the edge of the desk. “When the federal investigators started poking around Sterling Holdings, a few mid-level managers tried to burn the secondary ledgers. I copied them before they went into the shredder. They... they implicate Julian, but they also show how much he pressured us to alter the tax filings under threat of termination.”

Clara opened the folder, scanning the crisp, undeniable printouts of hidden offshore wire transfers and falsified depreciation schedules. It was damning evidence, far more specific than what the initial SEC audit had uncovered. She looked up at Sarah, her green eyes softening with genuine empathy. “Thank you for having the courage to bring this forward, Sarah. Doing the right thing when everyone else is covering their tracks takes immense integrity. You won’t regret this.” Sarah let out a long, shaky breath, wiping a stray tear from her cheek. “Will I... will I go to jail? I just followed orders, but I knew it was wrong.”

“You are protected under federal whistleblower provisions, especially since you cooperated proactively with our legal team before any subpoena was issued,” Clara assured her firmly. “Furthermore, Vance Global Solutions is actively hiring ethical professionals who were displaced by Julian’s reckless management. If you’re willing, Mara can set you up with an interview for our internal compliance division this afternoon.” Sarah’s eyes widened in disbelief and relief. “Really? After everything... you’re offering me a job?”

“We build our future on competence and integrity, Sarah, not fear,” Clara replied with a warm, encouraging smile. After Sarah left the office, feeling lighter and visibly empowered, Clara turned to Mara, who stood by the door with a subtle nod of approval. “She’s got good instincts,” Mara noted. “And these ledgers are the final nail in Julian’s coffin. The federal prosecutor won’t just be looking at civil fraud anymore; we’re talking about systemic criminal conspiracy and tax evasion.” Clara closed the folder and slid it into her secure desk drawer. The past was rapidly closing in on Julian, and no amount of denial could shield him from the storm he had invited into his own house.
