Chapter 13: Midnight in Chambers

The federal courthouse downtown was dark and cavernous, echoing with the ghosts of legal battles past. Julian and Elena walked down the polished stone hallway, their footsteps clicking sharply against the floor. Julian carried a heavy leather briefcase stuffed with Arthur Sterling’s signed confession, the encrypted server logs, and the original physical ledger with its fraudulent margin notes.

Judge Harrison sat behind a massive mahogany desk in his private chambers, wearing a simple cardigan over a collared shirt, reading glasses perched on the bridge of his nose. He motioned for them to sit as he methodically turned the pages of the evidence Julian presented. The clock on the cherry-wood wall ticked toward 11:45 PM. Fifteen minutes until the midnight deadline that Catherine’s syndicate was waiting for to seize their entire existence.

Harrison removed his glasses, rubbing the bridge of his nose before looking up at Julian and Elena. The old judge’s eyes were sharp, carrying the weight of decades of legal warfare.

“The evidence of fraudulent inducement is airtight,” Harrison said slowly, tapping the signed confession from Arthur Sterling. “Catherine and her associates built this trust on a foundation of sand. The moment I sign this injunction, the default clause becomes legally void, and any claims of asset forfeiture are instantly frozen under federal fraud investigation.”

“Do it, Judge,” Julian urged, his voice steady and absolute.

Harrison picked up a heavy fountain pen, his hand steady as he signed his name across the emergency injunction order, stamping it with the official seal of the federal court. The digital timestamp on the printer read 11:52 PM. Eight minutes to spare.

“It’s done,” Harrison said, handing the certified copy across the desk. “Your assets are protected, and federal marshals are already en route to serve the injunction notices to Catherine’s primary holding offices.”

As Julian and Elena stepped out of the courthouse doors into the cool night air, a sleek black town car was idling by the curb. The door opened, and Catherine Vance herself stepped out, draped in an expensive mink coat, flanked by two corporate attorneys and a smirking Valerie, who had apparently dried off from her pool dip.

“Running late for your own funeral, Julian?” Catherine sneered, stepping into their path with an air of absolute triumph. “It’s midnight. The keys to the empire belong to me.”
