Chapter 6 - The Secondary Host

The damp paper of the note weighed heavily in Evelyn’s palm as the freezing seawater lapped against her chest. The harsh red glow of the military-grade acoustic transmitter painted her face in an eerie, pulsing light. Julian floated beside her, clutching a rusted iron pipe for balance, his chest heaving as he strained to read the small handwritten words over her shoulder.

"What does it say?" Julian whispered, his voice cracking with exhaustion. "Is there an override sequence? A code to disable the transmitter?"

Evelyn swallowed hard, her eyes glued to the paper. "It doesn't give a code," she said, her voice dead flat. "It just says: 'Welcome to the management team.'"

Before Julian could process the chilling implication, the small maroon velvet blazer resting on the wooden crate began to shift. The sleeves twitched. A tiny, polished leather loafer poked out from beneath the collar.

Evelyn raised her flashlight, stepping back instinctively as the water around the crate churned. Out from under the folded fabric crawled another toddler. This one wore a matching black silk bow tie, oversized designer sunglasses, and a platinum wristwatch identical to Leo's. But unlike Leo, this child had golden curls plastered to his forehead and was clutching a silver rattle that hummed with a high-voltage electrical current.

"Good evening, Lieutenant Briggs," the second toddler said. The voice was an exact, chilling acoustic match to Leo’s deep, gravelly baritone. "You're remarkably difficult to brief in person."

Julian stared in absolute disbelief, his jaw dropping slack. "Another one? Are you telling me there's an entire boardroom of these... things?"

"We prefer the term executive committee," the second toddler replied smoothly, using the edge of the crate to hoist himself onto a dry metal platform. He adjusted his sunglasses with a chubby hand. "Leo handles macro-economics and structural sabotage. I handle tactical recruitment and asset retention. And right now, your asset value has appreciated significantly."

Evelyn gripped her service weapon, raising it with a shaking hand, though the barrel hovered uncertainly over the small child. "Where is Leo? Did he abandon ship?"

"Leo never abandons a ledger," the toddler answered, tilting his head with eerie composure. He pointed his silver rattle toward the overhead ventilation ducts, where a muffled, rhythmic tapping sound echoed through the metal. "He’s currently negotiating the surrender of the ship’s primary engineer two decks above us. An inefficient process, but necessary for the corporate transition."

"You're insane," Evelyn hissed, stepping forward through the water. "You're running a global syndicate using engineered infants as sovereign proxies! Who programmed you? Who built this network?"

The toddler smiled, a terrifyingly adult expression on a baby's round face. "Programmed? Lieutenant, we weren't built. We were optimized. The old world collapsed under its own bureaucratic weight years ago. We are simply installing the updates."

Suddenly, the acoustic transmitter on the crate began to pulse faster, its blinking red light turning into a blinding strobe. A synthesized voice echoed from the device's tiny speaker, broadcasting a secure audio feed straight from the luxury lounge above.

"Evelyn," Leo’s deep voice crackled through the comms. "Stop wasting time with human resources. Bring the second director down to the sub-deck. We have a hull breach to accelerate."

Julian grabbed Evelyn’s arm, pulling her back as the metal floor beneath them groaned and began to tilt at a forty-five-degree angle. "The ship is breaking in half! We have to get out of the cargo hold right now or we're going to be crushed by the ballast!"

The second toddler didn't panic. He simply picked up his silver rattle, tapped it against his platinum wristwatch, and calmly said, "The gentleman is correct, Evelyn. The descent rate is optimal. Shall we walk, or would you prefer to ride the elevator down?"

Before Evelyn could answer, the entire cargo bay wall blew inward with a deafening roar, unleashing a wall of black Atlantic water that swept them all into the pitch-black void below.
