Chapter 1 - The Midnight Demand

The heavy mahogany door of the luxury cruise ship’s VIP lounge slid open with a soft, expensive hiss. Outside, the endless Atlantic Ocean rolled under a bruised twilight sky. Inside, the air smelled of aged bourbon, expensive leather, and quiet panic. Julian stood by the service bar, his fingers digging into the edge of a silver tray. On the tray sat two towering ice cream sundaes, melting slightly under the warm recessed lighting. His white captain’s jacket felt suddenly too tight across his shoulders, the gold epaulets catching the amber glow of the room. He took a slow, measured breath, trying to steady the frantic rhythm of his pulse.
Across the sprawling suite, sitting comfortably in a deep, vintage Italian leather armchair, was Leo.
Leo was fourteen months old. He wore a sharp maroon velvet blazer that had been custom-tailored in Milan, paired with a crisp white button-down shirt, a black silk bow tie, and tiny polished leather loafers. Resting neatly on his round nose were oversized designer sunglasses that obscured his eyes, while a platinum wristwatch ticked audibly against his chubby wrist.
Julian approached the armchair, his boots clicking softly against the Persian rug. He stopped three feet away, his arms trembling slightly under the weight of the silver tray.
"Bring me ice cream," Leo said.
The voice was not that of a toddler. It was deep, gravelly, and carried the chilling weight of a man who owned continents.
Julian’s jaw tightened. He set the tray down on the low mahogany table with a sharp clatter. "This has gone far enough, Leo. You’re violating maritime safety protocols. Turn the navigation codes back over to the first officer right now."
Leo slowly turned his head. The oversized sunglasses reflected Julian’s terrified face. A tiny hand reached out, tapping the crystal face of the wristwatch.
"You brought vanilla, Julian," Leo rumbled, his tone flat and utterly devoid of childhood innocence. "I specifically requested dark Belgian chocolate infused with synthetic adrenaline. Do you take me for a fool?"
"We are running out of fuel," Julian hissed, leaning forward and gripping the edge of the table. "The Coast Guard cutters are tracking our satellite ping. If you don't drop the firewall, we all sink together. The passengers have no idea what you've done to the propulsion systems."
"Let them swim," Leo replied, adjusting his black bow tie with deliberate slowness. "The ocean is vast. People lack ambition."
Before Julian could fire back another desperate warning, the private elevator at the back of the lounge dinged softly. The heavy steel doors parted to reveal three female police officers in dark navy blue uniforms, caps pulled low, their hands resting firmly on the holstered weapons at their belts.
"Nobody move," the lead officer commanded, stepping forward.

Leo didn’t even flinch. He picked up a small silver spoon, dipped it into the vanilla ice cream, and whispered without looking up, "Officer Briggs, you're exactly four minutes late. Did traffic in the North Atlantic give you trouble?"
