Chapter 12 - The Cascading Upload

The emerald light washing over the server room intensified until it felt almost solid, casting sharp, elongated shadows against the towering metal monoliths. The screaming klaxon alarm cut out abruptly, replaced by a deep, resonant hum that vibrated through the floorboards and rattled the glass panels of the control console.
Julian stared at the main digital display, where a massive progress bar was rocketing upward with astonishing speed. Upload Status: 42%... 68%... 91%...
“It’s working,” Julian breathed, his hands dropping away from the keyboard in sheer amazement. “The decryption script is propagating faster than the firewall can isolate the nodes. It’s hitting every municipal screen, every transit kiosk, and every police cruiser database in the entire metropolitan grid right now.”
Miller lowered his pistol slightly, stepping closer to the display as he watched the data packets stream past in cascading columns of emerald text. “Does that mean... every false report, every ledger, every cover-up is hitting the public net?”
“Unredacted and unalterable,” Arthur confirmed, his pale blue eyes reflecting the green glow of the screen. “By the time the sun comes up, anyone with a phone or a transit pass will be able to read the exact price this city put on human lives.”
Suddenly, the heavy steel bulkhead at the entrance of the sub-core shuddered violently. A loud, metallic crash echoed through the chamber as a heavy breaching charge detonated against the outer side of the door, sending a cloud of concrete dust billowing into the room.
“They’re here!” Miller shouted, raising his weapon toward the entrance as the deformed steel door began to buckle inward under a second heavy blow.
Arthur did not flinch. He turned away from the console, his brown leather jacket rustling softly as he faced the doorway. The silver animal pin on his lapel pulsed with a steady, commanding rhythm, casting an unyielding emerald glare toward the path of the incoming threat.
“Let them come,” Arthur said, his voice carrying an unmistakable authority that cut through the noise of the exploding door. “They spent years trying to bury the truth in the dark. It’s only fitting they witness it come into the light.”

The bulkhead finally gave way with a deafening screech of torn metal, crashing inward onto the concrete floor as a squad of heavily armed tactical operatives poured through the opening, their weapons raised and ready to fire.
