Chapter 11 - The Crimson Alarm

The crimson klaxon bathed the towering server racks in an aggressive, flashing red light, drowning out the ambient hum of the facility with its rhythmic, deafening shriek. Above the central console, a massive digital display flickered to life, flashing a single word in bold, glaring letters: CONTAINMENT BREACH.

“They know we’re here,” Julian shouted over the alarm, rushing toward the brass-trimmed master terminal. “The intrusion detection system just flagged the bulkhead opening!”

Miller drew his service pistol—now entirely useless against the digital threat, but offering a comforting weight in his hand nonetheless—and turned back toward the entrance. “How much time do we have before physical security breaches the lower stairwell?”

“Less than two minutes,” Arthur said calmly, stepping up beside Julian at the console. He gestured toward a recessed port beneath the main keyboard. “Plug the interface module in now, Julian. Don't hesitate.”

Julian jammed the black-box module into the recessed port. The device immediately lit up with a rapid series of blue status lights, followed by a high-pitched processing tone that warred with the screaming klaxon overhead.

“Warning: Unauthorized data transmission initiated,” a synthesized voice boomed from the overhead speakers. “Initiating terminal lockdown in sixty seconds.”

“The encryption firewall is fighting back,” Julian gritted his teeth, his fingers flying across the physical keyboard as he punched in a secondary override sequence. “It’s locking down the output ports one by one.”

Miller kept his eyes fixed on the dark corridor behind them, his chest heaving with adrenaline. “Hurry up, kid! I hear boots on the metal stairs!”

The heavy sound of running feet echoed down the maintenance stairwell, accompanied by the clatter of tactical gear and shouted commands that were distorted by distance and the screaming alarm.

Arthur reached out, placing his weathered hand directly over Julian’s trembling fingers on the keyboard. “Breathe, Julian. Don't fight the firewall. Redirect its own processing power against itself.”

Julian blinked, taking a sharp breath, and pressed a final sequence of keys.

The blue status lights on the interface module suddenly turned a brilliant, solid emerald green, matching the glow of the silver animal pin on Arthur’s jacket lapel.

The towering server racks around them all hummed in unison, their glowing fiber-optic cables shifting from blue and amber to a piercing, uniform emerald green as the data burst began its cascading upload.
