Chapter 14

The tactical transport vehicle came to a smooth halt near the reinforced steel doors of the underground bunker. Heavy rain had ceased entirely, leaving the morning air crisp, sharp, and smelling of wet pine and damp earth. Clara stepped out of the vehicle, keeping a firm grip on the Golden Retriever's leash.

Near the bunker entrance, Special Agent Vance was coordinating with a lead tactical team. Standing a few yards away, hands zip-tied behind his back and flanked by two federal agents, was Richard. The immaculate charcoal-gray trench coat was stained with mud, and his face was tight with defeated fury.

Then, Clara saw him.

Sitting on a folding chair near the medical tent set up by the field agents was Arthur Vance. The old man looked exhausted, his breathing shallow, and the cut on his forehead was wrapped in clean gauze, but he was alive. His pale blue eyes scanned the clearing, locking instantly onto Clara and the Golden Retriever standing beside her.

Arthur’s weathered face broke into a ragged, indescribable smile. Tears welled in the corners of his old eyes, spilling down his wrinkled cheeks without a sound. It wasn't the exaggerated sobbing of defeat, but the quiet, overwhelming release of a fifty-year burden finally being lifted from his shoulders.

The Golden Retriever let out a sharp, joyful bark—the first true bark Clara had heard from the animal since it walked into her shop—and broke away from her grip, lunging forward across the wet grass.

"Easy, boy! Easy!" Arthur laughed, struggling to stand up as the massive dog bounded into his arms, licking his weathered face and wagging its tail with unrestrained fury. Arthur buried his face in the thick golden fur of the dog's neck, his shoulders shaking with silent, profound relief.

Clara walked slowly toward them, her hands resting in her jacket pockets. She stopped a few feet away, watching the reunion with a deep, settling warmth in her chest. Special Agent Vance walked over, standing beside her and offering a respectful nod.

"The data you recovered has already triggered federal indictments across three corporate boards," Vance said quietly. "Project Vanguard is finished. Permanently."

Clara looked from the federal agent to Arthur and the dog, knowing that the nightmare was finally over.
