Chapter 13

The gray light of early dawn was just beginning to filter through the pine canopy when the distinct thrum of helicopter rotors vibrated through the dense air above the cabin clearing. Clara stood up immediately, grabbing her heavy jacket and slipping the microfilm capsule securely into her pocket. The Golden Retriever rose with her, its muscles tensed, its ears pricked toward the sound.
Two matte-black tactical utility vehicles rolled up the forestry track, their headlights cutting through the morning mist, followed by two armed agents in federal windbreakers who stepped out and secured the perimeter with practiced efficiency. A senior field commander walked up the cabin steps and knocked firmly on the wooden door.
Clara opened it before he could knock a second time.
"Ms. Hayes?" the commander asked, flashing an official federal shield. "I'm Special Agent Vance—no relation, I assure you." He offered a grim, reassuring smile. "We received your transmission. We have units currently intercepting the primary corporate asset location at the old Vanguard research outpost north of town."
"They have Arthur Vance," Clara said urgently, stepping out onto the porch. "The old man who tried to protect this dog. They took him to the abandoned mill last night, but I think they moved him back to their primary underground site."
"We know," Agent Vance replied, gesturing toward the waiting transport vehicle. "Your data packet gave our cyber-recovery division the exact access protocols we needed to bypass their mainframe firewalls. We're moving in on their main compound right now. We need you and the dog to come with us as priority witnesses and handlers."
Clara didn't hesitate. She climbed into the back of the tactical transport vehicle, pulling the Golden Retriever in beside her. The vehicle's engine growled to life, and the convoy turned around, speeding down the forestry track toward the final reckoning.

The drive was tense and silent. Clara stared out the reinforced window as the landscape shifted from dense pine forest back toward the industrial outskirts and further north into the rocky foothills of the state park. As the convoy approached the restricted perimeter marked by chain-link fences and warning signs, she saw that federal units had already surrounded the area. Armored personnel carriers blocked the access gates, and federal agents in tactical gear held positions around a heavy concrete bunker entrance built into the side of a granite cliff face.
Richard and his mercenaries were cornered. There was nowhere left to run.
