Chapter 14: The Return to the Depot

The heavy industrial gates of the municipal logistics depot swung open with a familiar metallic groan as Julian stepped through them just before noon. The sprawling yard was filled with the rumble of heavy trucks, the beep of reversing forklifts, and the shouting of workers loading cargo crates onto flatbed trailers. It was noisy, chaotic, and entirely honest work.

As Julian walked across the asphalt lot toward the main office building, several of the depot workers paused to nod respectfully in his direction. Word of what had happened downtown had already flashed across the digital news feeds, transforming the quiet, unassuming man in the faded tan uniform into an unexpected symbol of quiet resilience and integrity.

Julian ignored the attention, walking steadily up the metal stairs to the supervisor’s office. He pushed the door open to find Marcus, the depot manager, standing by the window with a cup of lukewarm coffee in his hand, watching the yard below.

Marcus turned around, his weathered face breaking into a wide, approving grin. “Well, I’ll be damned. The news said you were at the federal prosecutor’s office this morning taking down a corporate cartel. I figured we’d lose our best logistics coordinator to some high-level government desk job by now.”

“You thought wrong, Marcus,” Julian said, hanging his heavy jacket on the wall hook and rolling up his sleeves. “I’ve had enough of corporate desks to last a lifetime. Besides, the afternoon shipping manifest for Sector Two still needs to be verified.”

Marcus laughed heartily, walking over to clap a heavy, reassuring hand on Julian’s shoulder.
